Talking Gulf of America

You can't make this s&%t up. We often worry that Trump will do scary things, but, forget he'll often do stupid things.

President-elect Donald Trump said Tuesday he wants to change the name of the “Gulf of Mexico” to the “Gulf of America,” among a recent string of controversial suggestions to expand the U.S.’ global footprint.

The chutzpah does rather leave one at a loss for words.

Here's an op-ed I saw today on the topic. I'm not saying I agree with it one way or the other, but I do think it's worth a read: https://www.azcentral.com/story/opin...a/77511939007/

I think I'll just "wait and see" what the man actually does once re-inaugurated. He seems to have sometimes-peculiar negotiating tactics. Definitely trying to push people off their bases. Although, I'm not quite sure why. I see no useful "point" in a great many of the audacious things he is lately saying, including this one. But he certainly knows how to play public opinion like a piano. He is definitely a "Go Big" sort of person.

He did write "The Art of the Deal," didn't he? Maybe someone should read it .

I agree that there is no point to many of the things that the president-elect says and does. He enjoys insulting and hurting people and groups.

He actually did not write the book by himself. His book was ghost-written by Tony Schwartz.

I have these books in hard-cover, and have read them many times.

BTW: It is quite ordinary for such projects to employ a "ghost writer." Most such book projects (including cookbooks ...) do, and some actually credit these project organizers.

However – these latest efforts are obviously "purely political." It remains to be seen what – if anything - now happens of them. In these cases, I suspect that the answer will be: "nothing." But, the audacious negotiator nevertheless embarked in it. (I'm not convinced.)

As for me? "Leave the world maps alone." There is nothing to be gained by it. Pick your battles: this isn't one.

I agree completely. The president-elect is doing this as a distraction.

Hope we don't have to buy the Gulf from Mexico.

I need to go to Greenland and why it is so valuable. Heard it is not green at all because a suggestion of early exploration wanting to confuse others between iceland and greenland.

So if this happens, which I doubt, who will pay to replace all the books using "Gulf of Mexico" ?

WE know who won't. But here in the US, it hardly matters since I expect 70% of the people here have no idea what Gulf of Mexico is, never mind were it is.

@jefro: This is a demonstration that we have always had a "Chamber of Commerce!" Greenland is ice, and Iceland is green!

(In the latter case, "I've been there." Very nice place to visit in the summertime. We had a marvelous visit and only saw a tiny bit of it. Plan to go back.)

FYI: Their spelling of their country's name is: "I´sland." Pronounced as we do. The entire place is one totally-volcanic island. Their national equivalent of "weather.gov" has three sections: (1) Rain, (2) Wind (sometimes strong enough to literally blow you off your feet, or trucks off the road), and (3) Volcanoes. Also related earthquakes, which there happen all the time as the lava moves around. Likewise catastrophic floods, which can happen if a volcanic vent emerges underneath a glacier. You might literally get a notice that you have just a few hours to move from where you are, before the road (or, your home) is covered by lava. It's quite different from Hawaií, but just as volcanic. Different areas of the island have very-different volcanic characteristics.

Most of Greenland, except for a narrow coastal band, is comprised entirely of glaciers and is uninhabitable. As far as I know, there is little or no volcanic activity there.

Actually, we do. Anyone with a tv will get news about what storms/hurricanes are passing through it and what States are going to get hit. Without checking any facts online, I can remember Hurricane Milton caused a real whack of damage in Florida recently, and that came through the Gulf of Mexico.

Who uses books anyhow, when they are force-fed google Maps on their phones?
