Have you thought about not waiting for someone to hire you?
If you learned anything you should be able to start selling your skills.
Contractor insurance is cheap, and if you market yourself right you can sustain yourself.
I dunno if you've noticed, but there's a lot more to a computer than most companies will allow you to make money off of. Just food for thought, my friend =)
ETA - The significance of this post is that experience is, generally, the best teacher. An employer would like to see what you're capable of, and in my experience, a portfolio of homebrew projects goes a long way. (ASSUMING OF COURSE, that you do a good job... otherwise it might be the worst decision you ever made, but atleast you're being honest about what you can do.)
