Google is there, so use it?

I am noticing an increasing rise in the amount of questions that aren't really related to needing help, more to options of various pieces of software?

For example: "How do I see the contents of blah.tar.gz, without actually untar'ing it?"

This answer to this question could be found by a simple 'man tar' or searching google for tar options, etc. Do threads like these really have to be asked? Most of the stuff asked here can be found with a simple google search if you use good techniques.

It just seems like a waste of resources to start new threads about stuff that is already right under your eyes.

You'd find that one of the biggest problem's with man pages, is that unless you have experience in using them, and understand EXACTLY what they are telling you, then they are somewhat daunting.

Hence the "how to decypher man pages" link in my sig. It seems relatively straight forward after reading that.

Overall, lot's of doc's are pretty unhelpful, without the background knowledge of whatever the given app or whatever is. They often fail to explain what the "this" is, or how it works.

I don't mean to be critical, because yes it's often a pain, with all the duplicate threads etc, but often those who find LQ as newb's often find the "post reply" or "new thread" before they find "search".

Just my worth.

regards

John

As nice as this all sounds, there will always be those members and newcomers who have in the back of their mind they are the first to ask, don't care to search and only want a direct given answer to them after asking first.

I see you don't have a question really.

Sorry had to do it... If it's a dumb question that a quick google search would solve I will usually say here's the anwser I found from Google
