Good news! A major phone spoofing site taken down

Well, they say it's been taken down. But when you DDG it, https://duckduckgo.com/?t=ffab&q=isp...=v320-1&ia=web, there still appears to be a site there. The domain name has the suffix .cc. I wonder what that stands for.

Apparently this was where all the phone scammers who impersonate your bank or Amazon or the police got their software from. They paid in bitcoin. There was an international police operation to find the people behind it and 100 people are now in custody, most of them in the UK.

Bloody good riddance!!

More important - they have made arrests. If you have a backup and are not arrested, you could register a new domain and get yourself back live on a cloud server in short order.

.cc is the Internet country code top-level domain for the Cocos Islands, an Australian territory. (Used to also be marketed as shorthand for Credit Card)

For text messages spoofing a sender is extremely, extremely easy. Commercial services allow you to set an alphanumeric originator ID very easily, we make use of this fact with one provider at work, and I have a different provider for one of my websites (TenTenths.com) that allows it.

Phones used to be a bit harder, when I was involved with multi-tenant call centers it was very common to set the caller ID depending on the outbound calling the agent was doing.
