Does anybody know what's up with the gnu kernel?

Why has it taken so long for them to complete it?

What are the advantages of a 'non-monolithic' kernel? disatvantages?

I don't know what took them so long to begin with, but nobody needs it now, nor has for years. So that probably takes the edge of the urge to develop. Basically, they'd have to come up with something demonstrably and markedly superior to Linux... and that'd take awhile.

yep, people aren't exactly waiting on the edge of their seat for the gnu kernel, since Linux has become as stable as it has. OTOH, linux wouldn't be much of a hit as it is if it did not have GNU for all those cool *nix programs

I maintain it would have been quicker just to add a kernel to emacs so that it could be a whole OS instead of just everything but the kernel :p

It might be far from finished, but it is still being developed. A new Debian GNU/HURD version was released about a month and a half ago. I have it on my stack of distros, just patiently waiting in line to be installed...

Even if it doesn't work as well as Linux, it has the best name ever. A doubly recursive acronym!

I'm thinking it would be fun to play around with. I have an old 386 laying around here somewhere, maybe I'll give it a go.
