Formatting an external drive to work with a Tivo hd dvr.

I want to format an external disk drive to work with my tivo hd dvr. When I called Tivo, the tech told me that the compatible (Western Digital) external drive that they sell is formated with Linux. I am working with a Dell Inspiron 9200 laptop, running Windows XP Pro. Could someone please help me accomplish this task?

Download a live linux distro that contains 'gparted' or if you have a copy of Partition Magic 8 laying around, install that, and use it to partition the drive. The only issue is whether or not there are certain files already on your tivo drive that you might have to transfer over, unless all of the OS and files needed is ona flash rom instead. I don't know how tivo works, so I couldn't tell you.

i dont have tivo or windows but if you mount it while running a live distro you probably would be able to investigate what is on there by browsing the file-system.

i am interested to know if you could then copy files to or from the unit and if they would still be playable.

tools you would need are (assuming a usb harddrive - replace x with the actual external hardrive)
fdisk /dev/sdx - and follow menus to create a new linux partition (off the top of my head:
p to print partition table
d to delete
1 first partion
n create new partition
p primary partion
1 first partition
(enter twice to accept starting/ ending cylander defaults)
t select partition type
83 linux ext2
a (does it need to be bootable)
w write new partition table)
then do
mkfs.ext2 /dev/sdx1

1 question remains is does there need to be some tivo software (operating system) copied to the hardrive to make it work ?
