For the heck of it...

Fella's, I'm hoping that this general forum allow's us to just kinda, shoot the breeze a little. Nothing too technical or pressing. I think however, that this my be an amusing and informative bit.
I learned a very important lesson last night, while dealing with my linux based (Ubuntu9.10)system. I had a problem with limited screen resolution. I couldn't get the system to offer all the choices, that I knew my monitor was capable of. I read the FAQ's out there and followed all the posts and how-to's, but was stuck in hell. Then, like the innocent words of a child, my wife said to me, "Honey, maybe your still thinking in Windows mode instead of linux mode." I realized that she was right. Windows is dumb, while linux has been designed to be prepared for many more different scenerios and has tons of extras built in. I figured that instead of trying to fix it myself, I'd trust in linux and let linux learn it, on it's own. I remembered that I always keep my monitor powered up. The CRT's really last longer with the fewest on/off cycles you put it through. But linux never had the chance to scan the monitor as it was being powered up. So after booting linux, I simply turned the monitor off, then on again, and when I went into display settings, low and behold, the entire selection of resolutions was there in the list. I chose what I wanted, and all is well in Penguin land.
My question is this, am I stupid for taking so long to solve this, or am I a genius for figuring it out? I know, it was all HER, it's always HER, lol.
Isn't she a doll?

So is the vulture your wife?

The answer to your question depends on who you're talking to:

If you're talking to your boss you merely explain you had a technical problem you were able to solve because you're just that good. :jawa:

If you're talking to yourself you say: "Maybe I should go with defaults first next time."

If you're talking to other geeks you never admit there was a problem at all because like girlfriends and wives they'll throw it back in your face later in an unrelated argument.

Ha, Ha, I think I'm going to like you Mensa.

You may have this trait but don't paint everyone as that type.

It was a joke.

I would say you're the genius. :D

Why? Because your wife only reminded you to start thinking in "Linux mode". You're the one that actually did start thinking in "Linux mode". It's not as if she handed you the solution on a silver platter. ;)

I appreciate your kind support MrCode, but you better watch out. I was tempted to report you for being a NICE guy, lol
I gotta tell you all, that as soon as I decided to turn off the monitor and then on again, I kind already new it was going to work. When the monitor came on and all those resolutions were in the list, I admit it, we was happy. I know that to get up to speed with understanding linux, I have a fun journey ahead of me. Learning to operate comfortably working in terminal will be worth it. You guys and gals are not shoulders to cry on. Your shoulders to lean on, right!
Bye

Poor, if it was intended as a joke. Not constructive.

You're entitled to your OPINION.

The OP asked his question tongue in cheek in my opinion and I responded in the same vein. The OP's response seems to indicate he got it even if you didn't.

It seems instead you chose to pick one part of my post and ignore the rest. To me it just seems you are trying to start an argument. I'll let you have the last word as I won't bother responding to your next.

Hi,

Yes, my opinion. And I'm not wanting an argument. Your statement was not a good representation nor constructive. The rest of that post didn't deserve a response of any sort that is why I <snipped>.
