That's true of the UK too nowadays, except for the posh independent schools. They don't want the proles learning stuff like that; it might give them ideas above their station!
When I was growing up, back in the 1950's, there were grammar schools for any children bright enough to pass their 11+ exam, even poor ones like me. We were being groomed for university and for that you needed Latin at O-level (matriculation).
Greek was optional. We had a choice of Greek or German in the third year, but I was already familiar with German as it was the language my parents spoke, so I chose Greek.
