The main argument for using Finnish as the international language comes from the history of the evolution of Indo-European languages. The earliest version of a Indo-European language that we can reconstruct is called Beginnish and the most modern form is called Finnish.

Without Finnish, we would never have had The Lord of the Rings. J R R Tolkien was mad about languages from boyhood, but all the ones he knew were Indo-European. Then in adolescence he discovered Finnish. It was a complete revelation for him. He said afterwards that Finnish showed him how much of what he thought of as just "language" was actually the specific Indo-European way of doing language, and that other ways were possible.

He was already making up languages and now he made up one with the grammatical structure of Finnish. This eventually became Quenya or High-Elven. He also made a second language with the vowel-sounds and rhythm of Welsh; this became Sindarin or Grey-Elven. Then he created a world with its own history and geography in which those languages could be spoken. And finally he put a hobbit into that world and lit the blue touchpaper.

In that case I'd opt for Estonian, it has similar qualities while appearing to be more economical. Foremost, they have far fewer double vowels/consonants.
And I say that as someone who loves Finnish language.

No Estonian, please, I think only Hungarian grammar is harder to learn. Mitä perkele. Estonian and Finnish are good, you speak as you write. I learned to read and write English by reading computer documentation. I was good already when I tried to speak it, o' horror.

estonian is funny language for a finnish speaker, they have plenty of words whose meaning is completely different in finnish even tho they spell it like fins does.

what i have heard is that greek is tough to learn.

Emerson 09-15-2022 10:27 AM

Yeah, Greece is my favorite country, I wanted to retire there. But their language is total greek to me. LOL

hazel 09-15-2022 11:33 AM

I did Greek at school. It isn't difficult to learn if you've done Latin first; their grammatical systems are very similar. Of course you have to learn the alphabet...
