Given that their business model is to collect and then abuse your data, why should they care if other people are abusing the same data?

Damage limitation tactics, spreading the blame, etc. Typical really. Not at all surprising.

How they perhaps should have responded, from a conscientious and moral standpoint, was to inform their users/subscribers to be on their guard for increased activity by scammers and the kind of data those scammers may possess. What they probably opted to do instead was to avoid highlighting this recent news in order to avoid mass outrage/scandal/panic/exodus of the majority fickle and pretentious chatter boxes who use the platform.

Not having a Facebook account doesn't mean you don't have a Facebook profile.

Last I checked, the Facebook mobile app has access to contact details on every mobile device its installed on, so if someone with your number has that app, so does Mark Zuckerberg. If they happen to also have entered your full name, birth date, email and postal addresses, etc...

Sadly, I already knew about their "shadow profiles" (wish I'd known about that many years ago), but at least I'm not handing my data over to them willingly...

Well, my position is that I have uninstalled/disabled my apps and used some web option to delete my (empty) account years ago and a second one to remove all information. How badly am I caught?

Any of your friends that has a Facebook account on their phone will probably have supplied information on you. FB will know your name, phone number, email address and probably your postal address. They will have these from various sources so they will know who belongs to your friendship circle. They will probably have a lot of pictures in which you figure and AI may be able to identify you on sight. They may also know if anyone else lives or once lived at your address; one man was put in touch (as a possible "friend") with the wife he had divorced ten years ago!

Luckily Facebook Pay is safe and secure.

IIRC this is has been in the media for a couple of weeks already, and again if I remember correctly FB knew about this in 2019 already but chose to ignore it - until they were forced to react by the hero that put the data up on the darknet.
In light of that, a little PR sleaziness seems harmless to me.

In any case "unsurprising" is the operative word here. Even my utterly non-techy coworkers understand that FB are the a-holes of social media giants. If only the alternatives were better, or at least not owned by FB...

Oh, and while we in "The West" are turning to alternatives in droves, I believe the situation is different in large parts of the world - FB effectively being the mobile WWW there...?

It seems there's a software tool to expose some vulnerability that links emails to accounts, and although FB knew about it they didn't bother patching it.

I suggest that their approach to security and privacy is relative the their users' level of precaution / care on those same two aspects.

That's a brilliant exposition of FB. Now I want to get that (and any other sleaze posters care to throw up) to the Irish Data Protection Commissioner who is currently investigating Facebook for something. Anything on taxes would be useful also. The webpage is https://www.dataprotection.ie/

Never used Facebook®, Instagram®, Twitter®, etc. Never felt the need to. Never intend to.

Plus 1 to that! Those places are nothing but troll-holes. However don't flatter yourself that you've got away with it. We both have "shadow profiles" on FB because everyone does, whether they use the site or not.
