finding installed softwares

hello friends

Please suggest a method for finding softwares installed in a computer
Since i am currently doing a work which requires details of installed softwares.But i don't know how to find it out . If any one knows anything about this , please reply

if your using a RPM based distro then type :

rpm -qa

if your using a DEB based distro then type :

dpkg -l
