Fight Through Windows Registry For Password
 

I started using kubuntu a few years ago and now I need to get my windows password on my old computer, didn't write it down anywhere. Where would it be? If it helps the username is Todd and its the only user/admin. The registry is just a colletion of text files if that helps anyones confusion.
Non-encypted NTFS partition.

If you just want to reset the password, try 'ntpasswd'. If you want to try to recover the password, try 'ophcrack' although this may be difficult if you used a strong password.

This is what Google reports:
"C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\SAM" and "C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\SYSTEM" (suppose you installed your Windows under C:\WINDOWS).

What Windows OS?

The password is not saved clear-text (dunno about =< win98)

It can be reset.

In order to recover the password, you'll have to hack/crack it.

seconding the question on what windows version it is-some are incredibly easy to reset the password of-via safe mode.

john the ripper is another good native linux; windows password cracker but if a dodgy memory serves correct it isnt in the ubuntu repositories,but easily found and built from source.

The best bet is to reinstall Windows and this gives you the opportunity to reset the password.

Its in the SAM not the registry. Last time I worked for smaller companies I just did a quick search for "linux boots disk windows password reset" or similar. there are several out there that let you boot, read the sam and reset the password for various account.
Wife worked in accounting years ago and called me one day to tell me how much someone charged for server password recovery. I worked for a small IT shop then so I told her to tell them I would do it next time for half.

chntpw is your friend. You can reset the password. You do not have to reinstall Windows.

The big problem is that I archived some stuff using that password... There has to be some way windows (7) can figure out the password. And Linux > Windows so isn't there a way? Also, my Windows BCD got corrupted and I don't want to call lenovo for CDs or buy anything (EasyBCD) I s there a way to fix that from Ubuntu /w Flavors?
