Favourite Gaming Experience
What is your favorite gaming experience? My favorite would have to be when I played Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past for the first time. From that point, I knew I wanted to make video games, and every idea I had, looking back, was taken straight from The Legend of Zelda. Another favorite experience of mine was Metal Gear Solid, from the creative boss fights to the stealth mechanics, I couldn't stop replaying this game over and over again. I wasn't able to, but my sister for some reason was the one capable of beating a boss who was torturing you, if you survived you would get an alternate(canonical) ending. I remember staying up late on a school night to finish off a boss fight at 12am in the morning.

While just about everyone involved in early computer gaming will always have a special fondness for the Marios and Zeldas, my favorites came later and usually with some playful Physics, how one could move and what you could do.
The first game that dominated my time for a long while was Road Rash because I loved the sound track and the feel of thrilling forces of riding motorcycles at high speeds. The next game held me in it's grip for 20 years qand that was Quake III, especially online space maps where the physics of rocket jumps, bunnyhopping, and extreme timing made things possible even blowing Carmack's mind. Now, it is World of Warcraft, specifically Wrath of the Lich King. The size of the world, the real time freedom, depth of story, variety of characters, gear and talents, difficulty of puzzles and battles have kept me enthralled (no pun intended) for 6 years now and shows no sign of letting up. All this said, my all-time favorite beyond any shadow of a doubt is Orange Box Half Life 2 and I still play it, or rather parts of it, a couple times every month despite having spent thousands of hours while it was relatively new. I am quite literally in awe of the people who created such a masterpiece on so many levels. I doubt a single player game will ever top it. |
Super hard question. but probably FlatOut2. The nice thing? yup it runs on wine in Linux;)

Going through DOOM Episode 1, with a Gravis UltraSound card, back when it was new, was pretty damn awesome.

Having my own pool table . . . .
(Sorry, couldn't resist. Except for PysolFC, I've never been much of a gamer.) I don't know what first son plays now, but I remember that, when we had our first computer he really liked Mech Warriors and Sym City. |
For me, it has to be the Thief series. I love the atmosphere of this game and the fact that it's a stealth game. Can't wait to buy a new laptop so I can play the latest game of the series.

DeusEx (original), Half Life and Fallout. Not "retro" but I didn't really get into gaming until a few years ago.

Mario Kart with 4 controllers on one screen for multiplayer. Portal and Portal 2 are great fun. I also like games where you wander around, so all of Myst, Riven ... now Obduction. Never been much of a fan of shooters.

Grand Theft Auto, I could play it over and over again!
