Facebook to join 'Evil Axis'?
|
That's why I fill in BS by default. It isn't because I want to be sneaky on the internet. It is because I don't want to be spammed.
Also why I don't use social networking sites. |

I have found it necessary to use Facebook.
But I provide very little information; most of my profile is blank. There is page after page after page of privacy/security settings; I've disabled pretty much everything. My picture is a screenshot of the compiz cube rotating. I use noscript in Firefox to disable any/all facebook scripts. I enable temporarily only when browsing facebook (and I NEVER browse ANYPLACE ELSE while FB scripts are enabled), and I disable the script after leaving FB. That site is HORRIBLE - and it is getting worse. |
"Facebook to joint Evil Axis?" It's sounds like it is going to be a future event.. I think it's passed google in the privacy "violation". I don't have an account and never had any, so frankly, I don't care. People should see it coming when they signed up. Common. Sharing private and useless information is what facebook is all about.

Or just don't use Facebook and Twitter!
|
Or use it wisely.
As others have said, when you use a social network you (or your kid, without your knowledge) contribute personal information "voluntarily and for fun." No matter who you tell Facebook et al to reveal it to, and whether or not they comply with your request (they don't legally have to...), just remember that you have revealed all that information to Facebook, Inc. "If you don't mind seeing it on a billboard by the highway five years from now, it's okay to say it on Facebook. Otherwise, keep your fingers off that keyboard!" Social networks are, by design, extremely public places. |
I refuse to use any social networking (facebook, twitter, et. al.) just for this reason. I am highly amused at how shocked some people are to find that these sites have 'betrayed' them. I posted the link so that others might share my amusement. ;) I agree with Dinithion and saw this coming from the outset. The scary (sad?, funny?) part is that in many business circles facebook has become almost required for participation and 'career advancement'. A very underhanded way to get the sheep to the slaughterhouse, IMHO. Brilliant!

If anyone requires me to get an account they can expect me to be living in a random city at a random address and zipcode somewhere in the US.

If you don't want to be preyed on, don't use Facebook, MySpace, or Twitter. That's what I say to my peers, at least...
|
I could care less what facebook does. I don't use it, nor do I use any other social networking site. The only time I have EVER given out my real email, was when registering for LQ. I trust Jeremy with my email. Other time I have given out my real info? When I subscribed to the Slackware security mailing list. Those are the only times.

Dogs and Kenny_Strawn have it right.

Speaking of facebook. It looks like they are going to launch a new feature where you can login with your cellphone and facebook will update where you are. http://techcrunch.com/2010/05/09/fac...ation-feature/
Yet another useless piece of information people think others care about. :P |
