Extended ATX power supply with ATX board
 

Well I am thinking about getting a new motherboard, some new memory,and new processor for my birthday in a little, if I do it's going to be in a kind of bare system package thing. If I do this I won't have the money right now to buy a new case and power supply. So I was going to ask a few qeustions about a couple things so that I don't end up having to wait to buy a new case and power supply because I have a mother board on my hands that I can't use.

First off the case and power supply I will be talking about is from my Dell Precision 420 Workstation with the original motherboard and power supply.

A friend on mine said this would be fine but I wanna try to make sure, The case is for an extended ATX motherboard so would a normal ATX motherboard just right in and be at home?

The power supply is 410 watts, I won't be trying to run the new stuff too hard but I was wondering ,in general because I'm not sure what I will get yet, will that be fine to power a newer motherboard.

Now the really...strange one. The power supply had 3 connector cords for the motherboard, the ones that like power it and stuff. One is a cord with 16, I'm pretty sure that is not normal. Another is 24 pins, which I believe is the normal and the last one if larger then the 24 pin one but I can't remember how many it has. Will this power supply work on a normal ATX motherboard?

Dell and other computer manufactures do not use the standard pin out for generic power supplies and motherboards. You will damage your new motherboard if you use this power supply with your new motherboard without some minor modifications.

Dell's manual for it shows that the rear of the computer seems to use a non-standard (proprietary) layout.

I don't know where you are buying the parts, but I would recommend Newegg.
