EU Court of Justice invalidates EU-US Privacy Shield

I heard this on the radio, so I don't have my original source right now, but here's some search results that seem to be explaining adequately what is going on:
https://clsbluesky.law.columbia.edu/...rivacy-shield/
https://www.cockroachlabs.com/blog/p...ta-compliance/
https://dataprivacymanager.net/the-e...rivacy-shield/
https://www.perkinscoie.com/en/news-...cy-shield.html
Quote:
On July 16, 2020, the European Court of Justice got rid of the four-year-old Privacy Shield agreement struck between the U.S. and the EU that had exposed Europeans to possible U.S. surveillance. The agreement had also allowed U.S. companies like Facebook and Google to store data about European residents outside of the region.
The EU takes its citizens privacy & data protection seriously.

And a good thing too! Those people even hacked Angela Merkel's email.

It will be a bonanza for the back-end folks with a whole set of geographic databases to organize. U.S. sysadmins can always Whatsapp a mate from the EU, e.g. Ireland (where a lot of these are for tax reasons) for the current password & log in. Hackers from any country might be able to hack in, but it should deprive the US of widespread access to EEA (European Economic Area = EU + others in the Free Trade Area) which are restricted by GDPR.

The U.S. approach of "You're free as long as we can still walk all over you" doesn't cut it here in Europe.

^ I'm not sure if I remember correctly, but the radio article specificall mentioned "Ireland and similar tax paradises" being out.
I think the idea is for the big players to simply store user data in the country the user resides, full stop.

I'd like to suggest that if one focuses on geography or even to some extent, politics, it is possible we are missing the point. The real locus of power is Economy. Anything of much value requires finances. We could probably include Love, but that can be fickle and difficult to define.. just wise to prefer. We all live in the midst of transition to Global Economy. The most powerful and influential groups are Multi-National Corporations. So let me suggest "Follow The Money"... not the Nation. Nationalism has been a useful distraction that "keeps the peasants" focused on incidentals and at each others throats while the rich and powerful go on their willful merry way.

There's a reason it's been dubbed "surveillance capitalism."

It's true enorbet that places like the US have sold out to big business tetotally, They even have one of their own as President atm. Most of the politicians also get elected on business 'donations', and are 'owned by them to a great extent.

In Europe, we like to think the Governments are in charge. They're not really, but when the governments eventually cop on, it gets very nasty for businesses. Witness the Volkswagen diesel scandal. Politicians get elected here by sucking up to voters, not business.
