Enlarging small resolution pictures

Is it possible to make a picture with a resolution that is small bigger without it turning to big block pixels. I realise there is no way to add pixels that werent there in the first place but is there an algorithm that will add pixels based on the colours of the pixels that surround it. If there is such a thing how can i use it.

you just want a bilinear or bicubic resize... most programs can do this, e.g. the gimp. often it seems to depend on what format the image is in as to wether it will allow certain kinds of resize.

There is a program called Genuine Fractals that is made by a company called Lizardtech I think (www.lizardtech.com).
There software only works in Windows and MacOS, but it is very good indeed at making enlargements of images.

I don't mean to be a pain but can anyone direct me to a tutorial or give me some advice on getting bilinear or bicubic plugins to work in GIMP.

there's nothing to say really.. they aren't plugins or anything special, just the way to resize things. never quite sure what defines it but in gimp or photosho if i open a basic image such as a gif then the resize often is a straight pixel scale. with a native image, i.e with layers and all that, then the resize works better.
