Email service that is not connected to Microsoft!

Guys I just received a message from Microsoft/Hotmail that I either gave them my cell phone number or I quess they will cut off my service. They gave me 6 days to reply!.
They refused me access today!
I have received this message (similar message) before from them and from gmail.

I'm completely fed up and in no way going to put up with this kind of BS, they can just plain shove it!!!!!!!

Where/what are you guys using for email that doesn't perseive they have some rights to ones mail, phone number, and life?

I wasn't sure where to post this, but security seems correct to me.

I used fastmail for a few years and found it to be quite good. I recently switched to gandi's email service, which is a bit bare-bones, but functional.

Check out Freedom Mail.

http://www.freedommail.co/

It's tied in with supporting the Sonar Project and the Accessible Computing Foundation, which is a good project.

I have an account there, but I don't use it, simply because I have enough email accounts already; I do, however, strongly support the cause of the Accessible Computing Foundation.

I route most of the email through my ISP's email service, but I also have one from my web hosting service: a gmail account (came with my Android) which I never use because Google: and an old legacy AIM account, which I use for a spam trap.

Personally, I like Autistici/Inventati. They're based, and have servers in, Italy. While one can get an account without any kind of payment, donations are encouraged and appreciated.

I'm sure Gmail will do the same soon, but I have stopped using it a long time ago.

I use:
https://mail.opera.com/
It has split off from fastmail, which is not free anymore.

I pay a hosting service for a little web space and some mail boxes.
I figure if you want something you should pay one way or another ans since I don't want to hand all my information to Google or Microsoft in return for email I pay a small amount each year (about $50 I think) to somebody to host my domain and provide an email service. I've paid Hushmail in the past also and probably will do again, just for another account.
Of course, I've used both Hotmail and Google mail for disposable accounts too. I thought the phone number thing was optional on Hotmail? I know it is, for the time being at least, on Google mail.

...but keep in mind that it has servers in the US and is therefore under US jurisdiction. Personally, I've been avoiding use of US-based email services because I don't want to make it easy for the three-letter agencies to poke their noses into my messages.

I purchased a Personal Enhanced account with Fastmail several months ago. Now I'm going to to have to move to another service and wave goodbye to my $40 fee...

If you've seen the news you'll know the three letter agencies have near-global jurisdiction, so it doesn't matter too much where the servers are. I mean what country would you recommend ?

I purchased my own domain and pay $50 a year to host my mail. Worth it IMHO to not have to change things around if/when i change providers.

So are you saying that one must have a cell-phone number in order to have a Microsoft/Hotmail account? I'm skeptical.

Whatever is wrong with your account is most likely not related.

I wasn't sure where to post this, but security seems correct to me.
Those are just some spammers trying to scam you (Both MS and Google would NEVER ask such a silly question!).
Ignore them and DO NOT EVER REPLY.

If it was an email received asking such a thing then I agree completely.
However, both Hotmail and Google Mail have asked me for a phone number when logging in. Google will accept "no" for an answer but I have a feeling I gave MS a fake number as it's useful to have a Hotmail account but if I lose it I'll just use something else.

First off it was not an email that I received, it was a note posted when I tried to sign in. It is still there, also today gmail gave me basically the same note! This was at a critical time for me when people were emailing about there Toyota Tacoma trucks they wished to sell me.

If you haven't received a not, you will!

I'm going elswhere!

Do you know this to be a fact? I read about it but didn't "think" it was meant for email services outside the US.
