Email providers with secure POP

This seems like something that would have been asked before, but I couldn't find anything after a few searches. I have been paying for Yahoo mail for a while now to be able to download my messages to a mail client. However, I'm getting spammed to death and I'd like to start over with a new address that I can use as my primary one.

I'm looking for email providers that are relatively large (or at least likely to stick around for a long time) and allow you to use SSL to encrypt account information (i.e. password) and emails. If there aren't any free services that fit in this category, I would be willing to pay. When discussing this in a previous thread www.nerdshack.com was mentioned, but that site doesn't update its news, isn't accepting new users, and gives me certificate errors, all of which make me a little nervous. What other providers are out there? Thanks in advance.

I've been with Fastmail for two years, and it was probably the best IT decision I've ever made.

http://www.fastmail.fm

The front page and mail screen look slightly odd because they are optimised for speed - the interface is so responsive that I completely changed my mind about Webmail and don't bother much with mail clients any more.

Fastmail is pure Open Source server software (Postfix, ClamAV, Spamassassin, Cyrus IMAP etc.), and they encourage users to use secure IMAP or the HTTPS Web interface. The company running it have been around for five years and have a large subscriber base of power users. They get enough business by word-of-mouth recommendation that they don't advertise.

I actually do mail server administration at work, but there is absolutely no point running my own system for private use since FM already do everything I would if I spent a lot of time setting up the whole thing myself. At a very good price, too.

Moved: More suitable in General as its not Linux or a technical question regarding Linux.
