Dual G5 PowerPC: Install Gentoo/Gentoo on OSX?
Ok guys, i know, your probably all gonna rant on me because im a mac user. however, i use this thing strictly because i need power to do Video editing, 3d graphics, dvd authoring, reall instense graphics stuff.
im all final cut pro, combustion, shake, etc.. However, i miss linux on one hand. When windows ticked me off, smack that reset button boot up into linux and away i went. I kinda miss that whole ability to compile something just for my machine and work with it. So im stumped, i was thinking of installing gentoo, but what can gentoo do that osx cant? (in means of graphics/video) So with that, i might install gentoo for osx, which just basically gives me the ability to install and compile any possible linux app. im using osx.3.9, i really need to upgrade to osx.4. which i dont like we only get backround 64bit operation, thats why playing with pure gentoo might be fun, since its be pure 64bit. ugh im stumped! See, if there was some way to run final cut within linux, NO emulation, id be on it so fast lol. None of that Mac On Linux BS. OSX sometimes makes me feel stupid. I heard once, or someone claimed that there was a PPC wine with suse that translated windows apps to run on mac? i DOUBT thats true, but if so ...lol i lost a few apps when i switched is all Its a dual g5 powermac, 2.25gb ram, crappy nvidia 5200 video card. |
whatīs wrong with gentoo for OSX or fink? if you need open source apps, thatīs clearly the way to go on a mac.
OSX is just fine and i would never ever get rid of it if i needed to do video/compositing. |
I wouldnt ever get rid of osx all together. I kinda miss the whole look and feel. I wonder if i could replace aqua with KDE lol

just install kde via fink and you have both. you can then use kde in full screen (switching with aqua with a hotkey) or use kde apps in aqua.
|
oh wow i can do fullscreen KDE? thats sweet! i doubt id be able to run osx apps in pure KDE, since theyre all programmed tightly with the GUI

nice computer,
I would try out PPC linux, but I don't have a OSX install disc if I ruin that partition don't uninstall OS X, you will miss it, but I bet you miss KDE now (funny I don't miss windows at all right now :D) OS X costs 130 dollars, thats a little extreme, I mean where the heck are people gonna get that kinda money? |

well, im putting together one of my old duallies, and windows will not run on it for no reason, but linux always has run. and i can use x86 linux to run apple Shake. so, atleast i get to use one of my high power machines to run linux to its full potential
