Well, I'm going to have to go back to dual booting.
I can't get synce to compile or find slackware packages for it.
I also can't figure out how to get openobex working with my HP capshare.
So to synch my smart phone I'm going to need lookout and activesync.

Honestly....

I use Windoze for some photo work (NeatImage noise reduction, EXIFER to modify tags inside JPEGs, and sometimes I run Photoshop Elements). Does the GIMP let me reduce noise or remove barrel distortion? I haven't checked, but I am wondering.

Also, I have a PCI Capture Card with an ATI chip to convert VHS to digital files. Haven't used it in a while, but I think the capture software is Windows only. ATI recently announced they'll develop Windows video drivers, but I doubt it will cover the Theater 200 MPEG capture chip.

Microsoft Flight Simulator is basically it now. For awhile Windows was also my choice due to just having dial-up, but I picked up an analog router for $5 the other day, so I can easily do Linux/Solaris dial-up again!

I use MATLAB for my academic works.Unfortunately there is no LINUX version availabe here, since no one uses LINUX here(nor do our institute's Electrical Deppt.,where I am studying).Though I am not dual booting.I am using virtualization.

I've been able to convert VHS to digital files using mjpegtools. Check out the HOWTO here: https://sourceforge.net/docman/displ...&group_id=5776

It's all command line stuff and I don't know if it works for all cards, but it's worth a try. It actually worked better for me than the Windows software (which kept crashing). There's also Avidemux for video editing, which works very much like Aviedit (the free Windows video editor) and Cinelerra, which I haven't used.

Games - yes I know I can use Cedega, but my PC came with an XP license so I might as well use it for something.

My GPS device is pretty much Windows only. Ubuntu would recognize it as an external storage device, but updating maps, etc, I couldn't get it done in Ubuntu. I actuallly could manage it in Virtualbox, but it was absurdly slow and generally just made me angry. So after being Windows free for about 1 to 1.5yrs, I gave XP a 20gig partition and just boot it once every couple of weeks to manage my device.

Mines running wince and it has a terrible habit of crashing while I'm driving along and have to remove the battery to get it to work again

You could try ysflight or flight gear as a replacement for MS Flightsim

Where can I get ysflight? Flight gear was an easy install (SuSE), but won't run on my test box (generic AMD/Soyo system) here (blows up with unsupported audio and unsupported 3d messages), so I can't even get far enough to find out if it's good enough ("real world" navaids and GA aircraft) for my purposes...

Visual Studio. Mono just isn't cutting it, at least not on my uni mac lappy.

A VMWare Fusion install pointing to my WinXP native install will do the trick nicely though once I get past a Grub Error17 issue it's giving me right now (I'm running a MBP with a MBRed hard drive and Grub).
