Dual Booters out there -- What do you still run on Windows
just a question to "Dual Booters" who still have Windows on their machines.

I'm curious as to what Windows programs you MUST still run on Windows
and what's stopping you from getting rid of 'Doze entirely.

well ... all in all there is just 1 pogram that I need windows for (discreet 3d studio max)... unfortunatly there is (as far as I know) no linux program available which is as powerful as this "little" windows program ...

linuxnut2003 07-17-2004 10:25 AM

some games like mechwarrior 4, earthseige 2 that i cant find a linux version for

What is stopping me from getting rid on windows? Internet Explorer. Kazaa ++, Enemy Territory, Counter Strike, Outlook express and the list just goes on. I don't think I will ever be a 100% true linux user since I like windows so much better. Also, there are no linux drivers for my soundcard. Linux is so hard to use. Sometimes it can be a bitch to install a program if it keeps on needing other files installed. When only about 35-40% of the North America use windows, (unlike the 90% plus that use windows now) then I might look at going all linux. Til then Windows is best for ME.

what do i run on windows? nothing. i just haven't had the heart to cut it loose yet. it's sitting there, unused...abandoned..unwanted...i feel so guilty sometimes, that i will log in to update my anti-virus, and while doing that i remember why i like linux so much better now.

I love this cool game called Elastomania which I run under windows.
I re-installed windows to try out Picassa and then a friend came over and installed this kiddish game and I guess I got addicted.

For all that matters, picassa is really cool.

I use windows only for gaming (I can't turn 3d hardware acceleration on in linux :( ). Web surfing, programming and other real work is done under linux. :)

Gaming mostly...then I use Quickbooks for my business.

I dont game, So I only need XP for:

MS Autoroute Europe 2002 (Codeweavers Crossover Office 3 doesn't support it yet, but Im sure it soon will)

Working Enviroment...
To remotely administer my works MS SBS 2000 (Will soon be attemting this with Rdesktop & WIFI)
Sage 10 Accounts (will be attempting this under Crossover Office 3 if Rdesktop & WIFI works on server)

I have no illusions that Rdesktop will work flawlessly, my only concerns are with CCO3 and Autoroute & Sage.
Once those applications run OK, I will be formatting my win32 partition as it will be taking up approximately 10gb of useful OGG / MP3 space

for school Electronics dev software (multisim, ultiboard, orcad, stuff like that), Derive, and MS-office

For fun i sometimes play a game. Haven't found any games like that for linux yet:(

Most of the schoolstuff I do on a vmware-installation, so I don't have to reboot for that. But for games I still have to reboot...

XavierP 07-17-2004 01:17 PM

Rdesktop works fine. I have used it to administer W2K servers and WXP server. It works better than VNC on Windows.

I log in to windows about once a month just update my quicken accounts.
Quicken is the only reason why I have not given up completely on windows.
I have managed to MS Office working on linux thru wine. Photoshop also works thru wine
although, I rarely use it.. I find myself using gimp more and more.
