There is only one operating system...this is why I use XP... its because all opearing systems have the same origin and are arrived at in the same way as each other...plagiarism for example windows 7 is all the best taken from Open source LOL
CP/M anyone?
I notice the spelling for a M$ user is no better than anyone else. But I really would not tag M$7 as plagiarized from open source as it's not good enough to deserve that claim.
....one day my 2nd-hand-laptop said, the XPee was not stable and corrupted, I deleted the entire thing and went in for Ubuntu & Fedora. Didn't make a difference for my usage of general browsing/watch movies.... oh yeah....except that Linux is more stable even as its kept on for a few days.... geee.......

I literally spent months (off and on) trying to get Xsane to produce decent scans with my HP standalone scanner and finally "solved" the problem by installing VirtualBox in Slackware, then XP into VirtualBox and the HP scanning software into XP. Works very well and now I don't have to leave Slackware to scan.

I still boot into windows on my second computer everyday for utorrent and playing HD DVD. I know there's equivalent for both of those like deluge (there's other torrent client but lacks way too much features) for torrent and MPlayer+VDPAU (Video Decode and Presentation API for Unix) but being a newbie to slackware and linux in general, I can't successfully compile it from source or make a slackbuild for it. Microsoft is dropping support for XP soon IIRC and I'm against pirating (also tons of risks using pirated softwares like virus, etc.) so I might just buy a cheap OEM windows vista until I get enough knowledge. I'm not sure where to start in order to compile it from source and manually do dependency management but I'm trying to learn bash shell, file systems and reading multiple linux books from O'Reilly. It'll be wiped off very soon.

Compiling Mplayer with VDPAU is pretty easy and u can use pats slackbuild from the slackware dvd. I am using VDPAU and its performance & quality is comparable to CoreAVC with CUDA in M$ Winbloat.

and please USE linux, and read the man pages, read the slackbook, that will give u immense practical knowledge and know-how that the book will just not deliver.

Some of the reasoning in this thread is ridiculous. Banning Windows from the internet? The only reason to do that is ignorance.
I still use Windows, because it is pretty much the best Desktop OS there is. Sorry, but Linux is still very much a mess for this regard. Linux sound and video is only just catching up, and so are pplications. OpenOffice simply cannot match Office, unless you are a very casual user. Sound is still a mess, and there is no professional video editing solution. I am not so much concerned with the politics or idealogly as to why this is, but rather the reality.
Not to mention Games. The latest Batman game is fairly amazing. I keep Slack around for network pen testing, auditng, programming, and learning, forever learning. It is also where I keep my VM machines to toy with OpenSolaris and OpenBSD.
To have a complete desktop experience, even without games, without using Windows simply is not possible at this stage, in a way I would be happy with.

On my old machine I have 7 GB partition. In the past I kept on it Windows XP. The system alone is practically useless. After installation of Firefox, GIMP, IrfanView, MPlayer, OpenOffice.org, Opera, Thunderbird and WinAmp the partition was filled in 90%. In result I was unable to install Service Pack 3.
Now I removed Windows XP and put there Linux Mint 7. I added to the default installation Midnight Commander, localized manpages, additional language packages, Amarok, aMule, Skype, VLC, English language dictionary with spelling samples and moc (Music on Console). The system with the applications occupies 45% of that partition and is fully useful. In result I have a lot of free space. To update the system is enough to click padlock icon on the task bar.
