Dual Boot XP and FC4 problems
 

I am trying to install Fedora Core 4 as a subordinate OS to Windows XP. I selected "Automatic Partitioning", however the installer said I don't have enough hard space.

I was able to free up 9.5 GB on my C: drive. I am aware that this is the problem, but how would I take some of this space, and add it to the FC4 partition? :confused: I would like to take 5 GB from the C: drive and dedicate that to FC4.

Any help appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I believe that you are using NTFS on your C:\ drive right?. Well, I don't think you can resize NTFS partitions. I think that Mandrake installer can resize NTFS partitions. There's also a program for Windows called "Partition Magic" that can resize NTFS partitions. It's not only freeing space for Linux, you will need to create a native partition (such as ext3, reiserfs or others).

So I'll use that partition magic program to change the size of my Windows partition, then I will have room for FC4 to autopartition?

Yup. Partition Magic should even be able to create Linux partitions for you if you don't want to use Fedora's native tool ;)

Well.. I don't really want to buy partition magic.. know of any free substitutes?

Mandrake installer should be able to resize NTFS partitions and create Linux native ones ^_^

i tried mandrivia le 2005 to go dual boot with my xp on a dell with no luck whatsoever. it tried to resize the c: and said it couldn't read the free space or something.

Well... I ended up finding a good price on Partition Magic, and it worked! All I did was resize the C: drive, and then install Linux.
