DRM Takes A Hit From the Recording Industry
Apple and the iPod has EMI "experimenting" with releasing MP3's without DRM protection. Read about it in The Wall Street Journal.

And the backlash begins......

EMI list some very valid reasons for allowing MP3s rather than some other proprietary format - for one thing, it makes them playable on everything. I hope this proves to be a success.

The irony of the situation...

In a highly competitive world, the DRM-protected media stands to lose because the users of products will catch up very fast to the restrictive aspects...

lack of DRM will allow music stores to offer any format they want, and if you ask me, that is the best thing about allofmp3. they get so much attention for being so cheap and legally controversial, but people tend to ignore the service itself, which is excellent, and would be much better if some of the big music stores implemented something similar.
