Communism has one fatal flaw - it assumes that everyone will work for the common good rather than for their own self interest.

(Managed) Capitalism turns out to be a better overall system because it recognizes this fundamental characteristic of people and attempts to constrain it somewhat rather than ignore it completely.

Interestingly in our capitalist society, especially in Information Technology, many have embraced Project Management which has exactly the same fatal assumption at its core.

Where did this Come from? It seems all the reply's have nothing to do with my original post.

As to your point, yes I do agree with you on Some regards. You can not have a perfect Human being. But you can make the common good in someones self interest.

Also explain why people make free open source software?

explain why people make free open source software?
1) Some people write open source software for their own use originally and then decide to share (notice that self interest is at the core of the design).
2) Some people begin open source projects with a goal to getting wide usage of the software so that they can then turn it into a for-profit enterprise by selling support/consulting. (Again self interest is at the core of the design).
3) Some people enjoy helping others because of self-gratification (e.g. it makes them feel good that someone learned from them which again goes to self interest.) I've seen it argued that all altruism truly isn't because it makes the donor feel good to give.

Despite all the above we do get benefits from collective efforts and I wasn't suggesting collective efforts weren't a good thing. I was simply saying trying to create a government (or a project team) based on the assumption that everyone will work for the common good rather than for their own self interest ignores a basic human characteristic. This doesn't mean people never go beyond self. Most people do for family (against outsiders) most of the time, most people do for a cause (company, organization, nation, religion etc...) some time, some people will do it for a cause all the time but to expect it to happen ALL the time for such a cause from ALL people is foolish in the extreme.

P.S. It came from the fact that your signature was longer than your post.

why stop at selling support/consulting ... infact i think its better for developers(especially new one) to see their own softwares as a product from day one so that its hard for them to "stray" beyond like mumbling or worst , seriously suggesting better alternatives applications or systems to their own softwares(for the sake of "common goodness" ?? i donno) ...

probably linux can be hard to beat ...

A most interesting observation. It's been my experience that whether it be communism or christianity, at the end of the day, it's all about sex...
