Do you use a smartphone?
 

Just had to help my wife out and give her my Blackberry because her phone is screwed up. I am now going through decision issues as to what phone to get.

WebOS is looking nice...

Since we are mostly comprised of geeks here at LQ, what better place to get opinions? I am on Verizon and having a hard time with choices.

What do you use?

I've had a Moto Droid for a couple months now (also on Verizon) and couldn't be happier. It does pretty much everything I would want a smartphone to do without any of the lock-down crapola that Verizon usually puts on their phones.

I currently have a blackberry curve 8330, but when Sprint releases the Htc Evo 4G, that's what I'll have.

I don't, I still have the traditional mobile phone. I'm in no hurry for any smartphone. If I were offered one by my carrier (verizon) - The Droid; when time comes to renew my contract, I might consider it, also depending on how much the price is too. Still I probably wouldn't put it to much "good use" anyways, besides the calling and receiving calls. I don't have a data plan, and I'm not willing to pay for one anyways, so I only have 20MB per month, and I also don't text. I also don't download games. $8.00 for a measly game? GTFO! I don't even download games on my "dumb phone."

You are aware that Palm has just been acquired by HP, aren't you? This could be a good thing (Palm's hardware hasn't always been of the finest, and HP often does a good job on basic ruggedness, and the budget of a HP might be just what Palm needed) or a bad one (HP might just want some Palm tech to graft on to their range of products and WebOS might just die a protracted death...anyone else miss Aegis/Domain OS?), but it is a change.

Android sounds like a good idea, but over here, in Europe, I haven't actually seen an Android phone that I like; I have seen Androids that have a price that I like, I have seen Androids that have decent build quality and I have seen Androids that have a decent specification, but I've not seen any that have all three of the above, and some don't even make it to two...

After many hours of research, I decided on the Motorola Droid.

I started reading about some of the Palm issues that can pop up and decided because of QC to not go that route. I also checked out the new HTC Incredible and every review I have seen has been concerned about build quality. The Motorola Droid on the other hand gets great reviews.

Now I just have this slight problem where I can't seem to detach my hand from said device. Anyone have a cure? :D

Unfortunately not. I have a nice big laptop and desktops all around. I usually find it more easy to just pull out my phone than get up and turn on a PC.

In fact the last few posts I've made here were done from my phone. :)

I don't have a smartphone, but I want one. So often when I'm out I want access to the internet. Wanting to look up movie reviews when seeing what's on at the cinema is a big one.

I'm probably most interested in the Nokia Maemo system. AIUI it's the smartphone that's most like conventional GNU/Linux. Android uses the Linux kernel but most of the userland stuff is different. I believe with Maemo much 'regular' software can be used, though screen size may cause issues with some.

I certainly want to be able to ssh from my phone, and an NX client would be the icing on the cake.

I have HTC S 710,quite happy with it thoguh wouldnt mind better speed.Its abit old and now is discontinued.
The point I would like you to consider is that Touch /non touch (which i like to call tactile :P )
i prefer to have mobile with physical keypads so you can type easily without having the need to look at the mobile , like while driving :P
but seriously in other situations too it is very handy.Imho

Been having a blast with this phone. Got it overclocked,custom rom,rooted and just love Android.
