DIY nas++ , VIA C7 or Intel Atom 330 ?

Intel is dirt cheap

For me, neither. Intel Pentium. Until they introduce the new chipsets, there is really nothing in it in terms of total power consumption, if you get a power-efficient motherboard, between a Pentium system and an Atom one - the pentium may even pull a couple of watts less, and there is about three times more computing power from the Pentium.

The E 21x0 series is almost dirt cheap (the Celerons are even cheaper, but if you calculate the bang:buck ratio, isn't quite as good, but, if you have a defined task and it will do it...); the 5xxx series is better still for computing power and hardly costs any more, but they will draw a bit more power...even that probably goes away if you underclock it.

And you could upgrade later, if that became necessary, which you wouldn't be able to do with a soldered-in processor.
