Question Disc drive loads and opens randomly at times

Hello,

So I just wanted to inquire as some may of had this problem at one time or another, a disc drive that opens randomly on the computer, it could be just after start up or when the computer is on and no programs running.

I have read a few web pages it could be loose connections, or a sensitive drive sensor gone wonky.

It doesn't happen often, there are no new software packages installed.

The drive does play CD-RW's and so on.

This video I recorded only shows the loading light blinking, so no drive openings at the time.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qApY0rLxHw4

Thanks for any insight.

Is this the same drive you asked about two years ago?

If so, replace it already. If not, use that thread as a guide for the questions people are inevitably going to ask.

Just replace it. A replacement is, what, ten bucks?

Really one of two issues. Some drive problem like sticky eject button or tray issue. It could be some program trying to access the drive.

Sure is, I had it disconnected for a while, I eventually decided to use it again. No idea on that now.

I didn't realise I had made a topic about this.

Well, it happened hours again. Hehe, silly drive.

The system doesn't shut down that much now, by changing the drive wires around last year, the system doesn't lose power like it used to, every one or two weeks for a day or two.

Somebody in the past expressed that it could of been a power supply problem, I doubt it or mother board.

Anyway.

It most likely is a physical fault in the drive itself. Stuff does wear out.

Replacing it or getting an inexpensive external drive is likely the best option.

I have seen quite a few optical drives that flash the led, make clunk sound, but don't eject.

Lots of moving parts as, with old tape decks, which means eventual failure.

Also sensors, which get full of dust and become less reliable. There is a sensor which in simple terms lets the drive know it has jammed, so this causes it to eject.

I didn't mean the disc drive caused the computer to shut down, I was referring to the hard drive, by using the other wires, it stopped that happening.

As for the disc drive, I don't use it much, so I don't see a reason to replace it. Sure, the sensor is probably the cause of the opening of it. I'll just have to put up with it.

These drives can only be switched off for the boot sequence, can it be disconnected from F12 as in power wise? The drive's been opening and closing for days now.
