Actually, if you want root it's easy. You install magisk zip from recovery. Some people would consider that too risky though.

Android itself doesn’t annoy me and never had any issues like you described but am not a power user. What does bother me is unless you are all in Google, app and data across devices is only possible via a multitude of third party apps. Doable, yes but it always bugged me. Apple is the same really: all in Apple and it works flawlessly. On Apple right now because I don’t want to have to think about my phone; it just needs to work.

I did flash my ancient Moto Razer with custom ROM and it worked great, there's one from Lineage OS for my LG V20 too, but the phone has h/w problem randomly reboot with high battery consumption so I did not flash it, that won't help anyway, but to keep the LG as backup.
