Database or Spreadsheet solution to Organize/Inventory CD collection?
 

Hi all,

I am new to databasing, but I found a good procject to learn with. I need to organize my cd collection and I am not sure that I want to settle for a spreadsheet. I run M$ XP at work, and most of my cataloging will be here. However, I don't want to use crappy Access for several obvious reasons. Does anyone out there use any apps that I can use on both Windows and Linux? I want to be able to access it/modify on my Slack box at home.

I guess if I choose my sql or post I will have to install Apache on my work desktop to run it. Am I in over my head with this project, or has anyone good with databases done similar projects (for local machines/not web server-based).

If not, anyone have any recommendations? What do you use to catalog your cd/dvd collection?

Why can't it be web-server based? If I wanted to do such a thing (incidentally, what I do instead is rip all of my CDs into iTunes and have it organize things for me), I would find some suitable PHP app - I guarantee one exists - and then run it off a web server I hosted at home. Then you can access it from work just fine.

You can use open office on both lin/win. Or if you really cheat, you can use your Linux box as a server, and from work access your mySQL database using OpenOffice, but that is a bit more technical than you perhaps wish to get into. OpenOffice has a great database system.
