HI,
I'm looking for a database program similar to dbaseIII+. Mysql seems to be like using a cannon to swat a fly for my puposes. Are there any good ones available for Linux????:)

well, i dont know what dbaseIII+ is, but if you tell me what u are trying to do, maybe i can make a suggestion. also, there is LDAP but i have never used it so all i can say are the letters.

Go with Mysql. Yeah, it's a cannon, but remember, you only have to use what you need, and there are plenty of ways to optimize it, so anything you don't want won't cause extra lag or make your life miserable otherwise. It's a decent overall db, and for somebody with a dbIII/IV background, it should feel like home. Another option is postgresql, but it feels a little too academic for my tastes (not that that's bad, but it's just my opinion...for someone that learned db's in college, it might be just right). Also, Mysql is widely used.

Other than that, perhaps a little more information about the information you need to track would help us point you in the right direction (for "personalized" db's), or your may want to check out the "programming" part of this site. (Contrary to some opinions, db configuration can be as complicated, and far worse than some of the bash-script/python/perl things that pop up there.)

I used to use dbase quite a bit and became fairly good at programming with it. DBASE III+ plus made that really easy because of the built in appsgen. You just created your database, ran appsgen then did a little editing to tweak it to what ever you wanted. DBASE IV imho killed asthon tate. Iguess I'm just to lazy to learn a new database programming language. I'm not looking for a database server, I'm just looking for something to create fairly simple personalized databases and reporting tools to accompany them. Thanks for the advice though I will take a closer look at MYSQL to see if I can make it serve my purposes.
