Current status of True Type fonts issue

Does anybody know what the current status is of the True Type Fonts issue is on current, recent distributions?

I can find many articles on the web on how to install True Type fonts but they all refer to older distro's (RH7/MDK7). Is this still something one would have to install or is this now all included in the kernel or x-server?

Thanks, Ronald

I may be wrong here, correct me if that's the case:

I think that TrueType font support depends on the applications and not on the distro. I think that OpenOffice.org doesn't support truetype (at least as of version 1.1.1)

But with AbiWord 2.0 I was able to use all of MS Truetype fonts.

Just a suggestion.

OO does support TT (:D). You just have to get the fonts from somewhere, usually like C:\WinNT\Fonts :p, which is perfectly legal as long as you have a legal copy of Windows...

I installed Microsoft TrueType fonts in Slackware. I forgot how, but I did it. There were also a few TTF fonts pre-installed, but I still think I had to enable anti-aliasing....

I seem to recognise JZL240I-U's post as being correct to what I understand. I also got them from exactly the same place.

Hence as I use Opera to browse, it's "Tahoma" for everything there, and I've set the OOo default to arial.

Hence my desktop, etc etc look as readable as any MS stuff!

regards

John
