Critical Poll

I was forced to fend for myself for dinner this evening and I got about halfway through making Kraft Macaroni & Cheese only to discover that the box clearly states that 1/4 cup of milk is necessary for the recipe. Much to my chagrin, we're out of milk...doh! Now that you can clearly see the dire, potentially life-changing situation I am in, I was hoping that the LQ communtiy could help me decide what to add in place of milk. Just to be clear, this is Kraft "Macaroni & Cheese Dinner", not that fancy Shells and Cheese stuff that rich kids eat, just good old Mac & Cheese.

trickykid 12-21-2003 07:16 PM

Add about 1/4 cup of water and about a tablespoon of butter/margerine and you'll be fine. I never make my powdered Mac&Cheese with milk... ;)

wytiger 12-21-2003 07:26 PM

In the absence of milk, I would substitute water, and an extra tablespoon of margarine.

twilli227 12-21-2003 07:28 PM

Milk would be best, but like trickykid said, water will do. Don't think it will be as creamy, but workable. When I used to canoe up in Minnesota and Canada, we could not take any perishable items with us, so we had to use powdered milk and eggs to add to our food. Not very tasty, but when you are hungry and 4 days away from the nearest food joint, then you tend to eat just about anything.

slakmagik 12-21-2003 07:45 PM

I can't vote - like everybody else says - it's more margarine *and* water.

Kraft? Whoo - fine dining. I usually go for the generic store brand crap.

Yeah, I'm livin' it up...nothing but the finest macaroni and cheeses. ;)

If I would have included Water+Coffemate/Creamora as an option, would that have changed your minds or is Water+Margarine the consensus?

slakmagik 12-21-2003 08:03 PM

Huh. I've never actually tried that. Feels like cheating, though. Sometimes you just have to admit you're out of milk. :D I'm sticking with the margarine and water.

Sticking with margarine? Hm.

ChasidishHarry 12-21-2003 08:12 PM

I would substitute butter for margarine, because it tends to come out creamier ;)

Regards.

Mac & Cheese
After boiling 2 to 3 handfulls of your prefered Macaroni, make your Mornay Sauce.
Melt 1-11/2 tablespoon butter on medium heat. Stir in 1 tablespoon flour, cook for 2 minutes. Add about 3/4 cups of milk, salt, pepper (cayenne pepper?), and cook while stirring for about 5 minutes. Add 1/4-1/3 lb of grated cheddar cheese. Cook until melted and blended.
Add the sauce to the noodles.

If there is no milk....
Boiled Macaroni, butter, salt, pepper, cayenne pepper, paprika, and better luck next time.

The above with cheese thrown over it works also.

Water + Whip Cream = Milk , right?
add water till milk like

BajaNick 12-21-2003 11:14 PM

I used olive oil one time in place of margarine, and once i didnt have the cheese packet so i tried to melt cheese slices but it dosnt melt cuz it was the fake cheese and i ended up throwing out the whole mess and starving for the night. :(

ChasidishHarry 12-21-2003 11:37 PM

u think you had it bad?

One night last year, I was so tired I hardly noticed what I was doing, and I ended up dumping mayonnaise instead of vanilla pudding on my plate... You imagine the rest... ;)

come to think of it, it wasn't half-bad, actually :D :D

Cheers,
Jerry

TheOneKEA 12-22-2003 06:04 AM

I don't like macaroni & cheese very much - it just doesn't appeal to me.

quietguy47 12-22-2003 11:16 AM

I'd rather starve to death than eat mac and cheese again.

fuzzyworm 12-22-2003 12:36 PM

it's gotta be whipped cream and water, I don't know why, it just sounds good

Stephanie 12-22-2003 02:41 PM

I use butter instead of margarine because fo the health problems margarine has been shown to cause.

ChasidishHarry 12-22-2003 03:06 PM

Finally! Someone backing me up ;)

Many people say that margarine, a semi-solid vegetable oil spread, is healthier than butter. That couldn't be further from the truth. Margarine is made by altering polyunsaturated vegetable oil to make it solid. This process creates hydrogenated and partially-hydrogenated fats (fatty acids). Just four or more teaspoons a day of margarine actually increases your risk of heart disease.

Thanx, Steph,
Jerry

dbrinton 12-22-2003 04:47 PM

Instead of 1/4 cup Milk, 1/4 cup Margerine, use 1/2 cup margerine - preferably butter. It tastes much better this way

ezra143 12-22-2003 07:50 PM

this has got to be the funniest thread I have read in a long time.

Yes, butter is better than margerine. And i would just use butter.

Whatever you do, dont use soy milk, I tried this once... not one of my brighter moments...ughh!

burnpile 12-22-2003 07:51 PM

You dont have the West Virginia Country Boy option listed - Trip to the cow barn with a tin bucket!

ChasidishHarry 12-22-2003 08:27 PM

Heck, that's the best option. As long as you have enough grass you'll never run out of milk. You're a genius, burnpile ;)

Just make sure you live next to a barn :D

Regards,
Jerry

p.s. You ever milked a cow, burnpile?

Capt_Caveman 12-22-2003 11:35 PM

Sorry burnpile, but I'm a city-slicker. You don't even wanna think about milking any of the animals I have access to. ;)

Though, I wonder what time the zoo is open 'till...

oh, God. soy milk tastes like overcooked cabbage... and combined with Mac and {what is supposed to be} Cheese... wow

Oh, well. I still think it's better than mayo :D

Did you ever see "Meet The Parents"?

If you did, you know exactly what I want to say... ;) ( I don't wan't to say it publicly :D)

Brain Drop 12-23-2003 01:33 AM

i would use ¼ cup of egg whites because their both white.

grizzly 12-27-2003 02:52 PM

I had to use water one to many times, so I learned to always check before I make it.

Cruxus 12-28-2003 02:29 PM

Please, real food, people! What's with all these posts about Kraft Macaroni and Cheese and grape-work-alike Kool-Aid? I was hoping Linux users would have somewhat more, well, sophisticated tastes than your average Windows user. If you're going to go for the macaroni and cheese, at least use real cheese and not that powdered, processed-and-reprocessed yellow stuff that comes in the evil blue box of death.

I'd rather go for a nice turkey sandwich with Lorraine cheese on rye or whole wheat bread than eat processed crud.

Capt_Caveman 12-28-2003 03:29 PM

I figure if I eat enough processed foods loaded with chemicals and preservatives, by the time I die my relatives will be able to skip on the embalming process and save a few bucks. By the way, I'm a huge fan of better living through chemistry, so the more processed and genetically modified, the better. Mmmm, all this talk is making me hungry, I think I'm going to McDonalds for a growth-hormone-laden cyborg burger with petroleum-derived processed cheese.

slakmagik 12-28-2003 03:34 PM

Don't forget, now new and improved with mad cow disease! :D I don't think those cows are mad; they're just misunderstood.

Can't speak for anybody else, but it's not that I don't have sophisticated taste... well, I don't, but even if I did, it wouldn't be the issue. I spent all my Lorraine cheese money on my new hard drive and so it's macaroni and water time. ;)

Nice.

---EDIT---

I think you have to supersize it to get the mad-cow spread.

frieza 12-28-2003 04:25 PM

water?

ChasidishHarry 12-28-2003 04:29 PM

who voted "lactose-intolerant" ? ;)

p.s. is this the only thread with 5/5 rating :D ?

Emmet L. Brown 12-29-2003 06:19 AM

I say just add a spoonful of sugar, if it worked for that british medicine cr_p it may well work now.

Cheers,
Jerry's acquintance (spelled wrong, but heck with it)

Was that from Marry Poppins - "Just a spoonful of sugar makes the medicine go down, the medicine go down, the medicine go down......." ?

Regarding the mad cow disease, I heard somewhere that the experts (schmu*ks :D) just look into the cows' eyes and they know if they've got it. Is that true?
