Creating a personal digital certificate

I'd like to create a personal digital certificate. The reason I want to do this is the newest version of AOL Instant Messenger supports encryption but you need a .p12 or .pfx file. If you try to go through aol about obtaining this they give you some offer from to purchase it, is it possible to just create this certificate file? And if so, how? Thanks.

Yeah, but it's next to worthless. If anybody could create their own, without some form of verification, then you have the same situation as not having any certificates at all. It paying the fee bothers you, take heart. Verisign is moving to linux at the present time.

Certs can be created by individuals, for corporate purposes, without verification, but that means that you're customers need to trust you. Certs are mainly for people scouring the web, and their value is less than certain.
