Create text messaging update/subscription service...

I know there are websites that allow you to create text groups on a subscription basis like text "Groupname" to 585656 or whatever to sign up for updates. I have a friend that said some providers could do that for free, does anyone know what this might be or know of anything that can do this?

Also, I have a server, is there some sort of application or what not that I could set up for free or cheaply that could do this? (Maybe start a small business or something)

message, service, subscription, text
