1. Because I don't give a shit about this left/right nonsense.

2. Because I focused on the single worst offender that was top of your most recent post.

3. Because [what enorbet posted].

I don't take any news source at their word - it's absolutely healthy to read around and try to decipher the facts - but there's a difference between biased news sources pushing an agenda and tabloid trash that deliberately seeks and posts sensationalist nonsense in order to increase readership.

" since no sane old person should be in the sun supplements are necessary."

Seem to be that one still might need to be in the sun. Mad Dogs and Englishmen too.

"Vitamin D3 is produced in the skin from 7-dehydrocholesterol by UV irradiation, which breaks the B ring to form pre-D3. Pre-D3 isomerizes to D3 or with continued UV irradiation to tachysterol and lumisterol"

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK278935/

Which is of course ironic because sunscreen blocks uv. I'd wear SPF 1000 if they sold it.

I used to walk on my return to the ship in Subic Bay where life is similar to any third world place in the world (I thought.)
On one side of the street they would sell papers and hawk the news. On the other side of the street a different group would be selling the newspapers that had almost the opposite news. I thought that was just humorous third world deal and that couldn't happen in the US. When I finally returned to the US it was clear that every news outlet was just like every third world country. The news is not factual. Not in any country that I have ever been in. If you believe the news is factual then you have not been paying attention.

I'd get a lot of laughs from the Voice of North Korea. What a hoot.

Sorry about that jefro.
I made an "off topic" post about your sig ('Statistically speaking Covid is not affecting 1-20 year olds. Why not?') by posting a link like this.

I think it is appropriate to mention in this Covid 19 thread about which so much misinformation ha been spread, to note that it is extremely dangerous and ignorant to "just shut down" as so many do these days and revert to the Medieval level of analysis of depending on zero experts and only believing what you experience first hand ... or worse, merely confirm your beliefs. That's not merely a "slippery slope". That's a slippery slope at a tiny ledge in a bottomless pit. There's no shortcuts to reasonable.

Two stories that I heard on the BBC World News this morning.

1) In New South Wales, cafes are opening but they have to observe social distancing, which rather destroys the atmosphere. One enterprising owner has filled up the empty seats with cardboard cutouts and plays a recording of the usual social noises.

2) The Ukraine has apparently become a centre for commercial surrogacy. However, people can no longer travel there to pick up the babies they ordered. There are a lot of babies stranded there.

2damncommon, my original sig was that those under 20 tend to have higher body temperatures and maybe that might be a clue to why they aren't affected as much. (I still suspect that)

I changed the last sig to a happier note.

100 out of New York is still a statistical blip.

20,000 children in the US are diag'd with kawasaki disease.

So, something is causing their disease. The new drugs may help but rarely is kawasaki disease fatal.

No parent would ever like to hear bad news.

Sweden continues to buck the world. Live healthy and let the herd immunity win. Time will tell.

Realizing, of course that people don't die from Covid-19. They die from pneumonia caused by their body's reaction to Covid-19. Well, and whatever else it causes.

Is it really working?

The anti-vaxxers are already protesting against a COVID 19 vaccine.

I asume you mean the shutdown?

Australia has a population of about 25M and instituted a shutdown fairly early (should have been earlier, but our national CEO needs too much convincing); the total number of covid-19 deaths so far (20200516) is 98 [edit: 100 on 20200520] (total infections 7023 on 20200515). The comparatively low population density helped, but major cities are pretty crowded. The real biggie was not having the health system swamped.

The restrictions are being eased this weekend, but will (I hope!!) be re-enforced at the first sign of a new infection spike.

Using the "herd immunity" argument against the most effective way of attaining herd immunity. I'm really depressed at the number of people rushing to self nominate for Darwin Awards.

The version of disease in Australia isn't the European version.

Also there are a billion variables that can't be discovered easily. Temperature, UV light index, viral load, Vitamin D levels, genetic makeup of population, personal habits, personal actions when fighting a cold, materials in common touch, food, spices, general health, prior infection with similar virus, and maybe way more come to my mind along with what many scientist suggest, dumb luck.

It was suggested that the Thai people tend to clean their nasal passages and might be a reason their viral load was low, leading to almost no deaths.

I don't want to force any drug on a person if they don't want it. If I were young and healthy 25 year old I'd maybe wait on vaccine. The people who need the vaccine really are the old and pre-existing conditions right now.

How do you know that? And what makes you think that there is only one "version" in each of these countries?

If only the people who need the vaccine get a shot, the virus spreading won't decrease.

But that's how we do it with flu. Every year they vaccinate the old, health workers, and college students (who often crowd together and tend to catch anything that's going). Other people can buy a shot in a pharmacy but they aren't vaccinated routinely.

And people with chronic illnesses.

They aren't offered free vaccinations, but they are strongly encouraged to spend the $15 and have it done. Given the annual 1500-3000 influenza related deaths we have I'm inclined to approve of stronger encouragement (one of the football codes here is making noises about "no jab no play").

Herd immunity is maximised by vaccinating as many people as possible, and this helps protect individuals who can't get vaccinated.
