I am single this past week as the wife< My cook> is on vacation with my inlaws.

So. Tonight is dollar a gordita night for me. We only have one Asian restaurant. But lots of Mexican street vendors make up for that lack.

Chorizo is spicy sausage infused with red chili. Lingua is chopped beef tongue. One of my favorites with green chile verde. Sopas with Honey and vanilla icecream for dessert after I polish off the beer and gorditas..

I tried a new recipe myself tonight, in fact--fish pie. I read about it in a Phyrne Fisher mystery. I routinely post recipes to my personal (as opposed to my LQ) blog.

I'll go on record as being a fan of eating and food! Cooking, not so much. That's not to say I don't cook well, I do, I just don't really enjoy it. My wife is an excellent cook and enjoys it, so that works out well for me.

I grew up in the Southwest of the U.S. (Tucson and San Diego) and spent some time as a child and teen living in Mexico, so I have a high appreciation for good Mexican food. It used to be hard to find good Mexican food here in the Pacific NW, but not any more. There's lots of good Mexican food around my town now.

Anyway, relax and have a fish pie. (It was delicious, by the way. I used a tin of salmon that my daughter in Oregon sent for Christmas, plus a tin of prawns that I picked up at the local market. Susan, who was skeptical of the concept when I first mentioned it, savored each bite. As did I.)

And yet we talk about bytes, cookies, and spam, ...

... chips, links, kernels, root squash, and raspberry pi, ...

... serial (cereal?), dates, grub, and hash.

Not to mention menus, forks, platters, and tables.

No wonder he is hungry.

Wife prolly got his hind quarters all GPS'd up with some "tracker" while she's at the inlaws.

Yep. It is called a Iphone 5S that she maintains the contract on it to keep tabs on me. :)

Started off breakfast with a Cinnabon (big freaking cinnamon roll) and filling my Large Pump thermos
with the strongest coffee Flying J truckstop sells. Thermos refill costs $1.89 for you guys that don't know. It is pretty cost effective vs starbucks <which we do not have in my one horse town anyways>.

I love to eat (just finished a half-pound ribeye at my local) and drink (not working for the next few days so some local ale is. On hand) but, sadly, I can't cook at all. Mind you I am also a little too lazy to cook as it seems to take longer to make "something fancy" than to eat it.

I have trouble with this very topic.
I have very few meals these days.

I like to go out at least once a week for some spicy food. I bring my dinner to work everyday so it gets kind of boring.

Good choice of places in my town so that makes it easy.


Mexican street vendors?? How close to the boarder are you? I have eaten stuff from the street vendors but it was when I did drink and was overseas.

Did eat a "Detroit" pizza off a trailer vendor last week. Didn't have Michigan plates on it so not sure if it was authentic.

Ojinaga Mexico. A town of about 30,000, is a couple of hours away. We also have local vendors in our town. There are a lot of food trucks now because of the oil boom we were going through recently. These trucks serviced the oil field workers.

They do this instead of a brick and mortar restaurant to beat out local licensing and taxation.

I know who is safe to buy from and that they use fresh ingredients. How you may ask? My wife works for City Hall and knows everyone in this town. Plus she does the health inspections and tells who to stay away from and who it is safe to buy food from.

Then there is the brick and mortar Mexican restaurants around here. My OP was about a vendor I know that has a 1 dollar gordita night every week and I make it point to hit him and family <who work with him>
that night.

From what I understand. Having once been a resident near Philly (Philadelphia Pennsylvania).

The brick and mortar stores love the street vendors because they bring in people from the sidewalk to the store. 1st they stop and grab some food. Then go in the store and look around. So when a street ven dor needs to relieve themselves. They get someone they trust to watch their stand <clerk in the store> and go into the store they are in front of to use their restroom facilities. That was what I saw living in the big city.

I make it point when I go down to Austin Texas. When I visit my son and his family. To hit up every greasy spoon I can think of. Like The Noble Pig.

At 6 foot 7 inches and 260 lbs. Eating is a big priority of mine and I like it to taste good.

Both my wife and I love to cook (together ...), and we also love going out to eat at some of the exceptional(!) restaurants that can be found here.

Mexican food, from Mexico, served by natives who really know the cuisine and how to prepare it (vs. "Tex-Mex"), is a special treat. Mexico has an amazingly rich culinary culture.

Need to tweak your opinions there pardner. Tenn. is a long way away from the Border here.

The illegal's claimed it was the closest thing to real Mexican food. I ate there but wondered when Austin would get health standards.
