Cooking and Food and going out to eat

I am surprised no one eats around here like me and consider food a daily pleasure to be enjoyed like music or movies. I am single this past week as the wife< My cook> is on vacation with my inlaws. So. Tonight is dollar a gordita night for me. We only have one Asian restaurant. With some Red Stripe Beer. Chorizo is spicy sausage infused with red chili. Lingua is chopped beef tongue. One of my favorites with green chile verde. Sopas with Honey and vanilla icecream for dessert after I polish off the beer and gorditas.. |

I tried a new recipe myself tonight, in fact--fish pie. I read about it in a Phyrne Fisher mystery. I routinely post recipes to my personal (as opposed to my LQ) blog. |
I'll go on record as being a fan of eating and food! Cooking, not so much. That's not to say I don't cook well, I do, I just don't really enjoy it. My wife is an excellent cook and enjoys it, so that works out well for me.
I grew up in the Southwest of the U.S. (Tucson and San Diego) and spent some time as a child and teen living in Mexico, so I have a high appreciation for good Mexican food. It used to be hard to find good Mexican food here in the Pacific NW, but not any more. There's lots of good Mexican food around my town now. |

Thermos refill costs $1.89 for you guys that don't know. It is pretty cost effective vs starbucks <which we do not have in my one horse town anyways>. |
I love to eat (just finished a half-pound ribeye at my local) and drink (not working for the next few days so some local ale is. On hand) but, sadly, I can't cook at all. Mind you I am also a little too lazy to cook as it seems to take longer to make "something fancy" than to eat it.

I like to go out at least once a week for some spicy food. I bring my dinner to work everyday so it gets kind of boring.
Good choice of places in my town so that makes it easy. Mexican street vendors?? How close to the boarder are you? I have eaten stuff from the street vendors but it was when I did drink and was overseas. Did eat a "Detroit" pizza off a trailer vendor last week. Didn't have Michigan plates on it so not sure if it was authentic. Where do NY city hot dog vendors go for restroom break anyway? |
Ojinaga Mexico. A town of about 30,000, is a couple of hours away. We also have local vendors in our town. There are a lot of food trucks now because of the oil boom we were going through recently. These trucks serviced the oil field workers.
They do this instead of a brick and mortar restaurant to beat out local licensing and taxation. I know who is safe to buy from and that they use fresh ingredients. How you may ask? My wife works for City Hall and knows everyone in this town. Plus she does the health inspections and tells who to stay away from and who it is safe to buy food from. Then there is the brick and mortar Mexican restaurants around here. My OP was about a vendor I know that has a 1 dollar gordita night every week and I make it point to hit him and family <who work with him> that night. Quote:

Both my wife and I love to cook (together ...), and we also love going out to eat at some of the exceptional(!) restaurants that can be found here.
Mexican food, from Mexico, served by natives who really know the cuisine and how to prepare it (vs. "Tex-Mex"), is a special treat. Mexico has an amazingly rich culinary culture. |
