Computers have been invaded by idiots
 

Once upon a time the computer was like a wizards talisman, a strange and powerful object that few could understand let alone get a response from.

Now the hicks' high school that I go has a crowed of highly appinionated people that have no real understanding of what to do with a computer aside from finding small games on the internet yet they think that they know everything about computers.

I can't think of anyway to fix this of hand but it needs to be solved.

This is due to the internet being commercialized, which started in the mid 1990s, other wise the PC industry would have had a much slower start. Even back then the internet was far more tolerable then it is today IMO. Sure its nice to have a high speed connection, but that means all the crap on the internet gets to you just that much faster. You have pretty much precisely described the person(s) who are using computers who are probably computer illiterate, but don't forget the other side. The corporations that hijacked the internet, as well as the spammers, and creeps (stalkers) out there on the internet.

Damn, I just got another Bank of America Phishing attempt in my box. See what I mean? This was unheard of years ago. *sigh*

Why? Are you also going to fix all the people who don't know how a car works? Or all the people who don't know basic world geography?

I would be more than happy if our schools would just teach grammar and spelling.....

It would also be nice if the education system here put a lot more emphasis on math and science. This country is sadly so far behind in these subjects compared to other countries.

Any how, boy racers at least know something about cars but these people know
less about computers and think that being a nerd is proof of having less qualification than them.

Lest we forget: both "idiot" and "know-it-all" are relative terms.

That may be why YOU bought your computer. But I rather doubt that's the main reason computers are bought. In my opinion, computers are the most extensible tool that can be found in a household. You don't need to know how to use one, really, to get it to perform all sorts of tasks, from Internet browsing, to letter writing, to playing games.

I rather doubt my 86 year old grandfather uses his for porn. He does use his for picture cataloging of a different sort. He takes pictures of his orchid collection (rather large), and shares them with other members of his orchid society.

i can tell you right now, there wouldnt have been the rush to own a computer if it hadnt been for the easy availability of pornography on the internet. it was the same when VCR's came out, people were saying "yes, now we can watch die hard 2!", and then secretly going home and watching "debbie does dallas". looking back to cinema, even some of the earliest black and white films were pornographic. would the camcorder have sold as well if there were no sexual agenda behind it?

coming back to today, digital cameras and web cams wouldnt have sold in the numbers they have, had it not been for people wanting to take sexy snaps of themselves and each other, this is what drives alot of visual technology, it always has.

Basically you're saying that pr0n is the top reason for the advancement of technology? Is there some sort of official documentation or research that supports your claim? I'm your average male, with as much libido as the next male. I didn't buy my first VCR or DVD player, or even my toaster, with thoughts of pr0n in my mind.

i didnt say i thought porn was the top reason for the advancement of technology, but when a technology is suitable for pornography, people will use it for that purpose (given that we all like to look at the opposite sex naked, i know i do), and that drives sales up. the boom in home computing didnt come from spreadsheets.

in the future, a company may create a holographic device that can beam a holographic image anywhere you choose. the image is indistinguishable from a real person standing there. the company may have started the business as an aid to the medical industry, but soon after, the hologram units become as cheap as a pc, and then after a few more years cheaper still, to the point where they are affordable in the home. then some entrepreneur creates a product called 'the hollocam'

I think it's more likely that the massive majority of people buy computers for their utility; Paying their bills, buying online, playing games. Perhaps pr0n is a secondary thought.

How about these:
- Spreadsheets: "I sure am tired of balancing my checkbook by hand. I sure wish there was a faster way!"
- Web access: "I'd like to keep track of my stocks in real time!" Or, "I want to be able to buy online, so I don't have to go to the store for everything." Or, "Wouldn't it be nice if I could communicate with my friends with email/blog/webcam?"
- Gaming: "I'd like to play my favorite games, but my current computer can't do it any more. Guess I'll have to upgrade."

I don't believe I've ever heard someone say, "I need my pr0n. Think I'll pay $1000 for a pr0n machine!"

I'm hoping that you aren't seeing this as any attack on you personally. When I read your original post, I thought it was an interesting subject, and decided to debate.

i think that it maybe true that the people who buy computers today do want to do other things ASWELL AS look at porn, but i was specifically referring to the mid 90's when online banking, instant messaging etc wernt so big and common as they are now,i actually think porn was one of the primary reasons why someone bought a home computer, they may say they wanted to do work on it, but you just know if you looked in the bookmarks there would be a sexy bookmark that a website had deposited there, without the that user knowing about it.

The logic that porn is the primary reason people buy computers is completely laughable. The instance on it, basically with the attitude "it's true because I say so..." is trolling.
