Computer? Hello Computer? Just use the keyboard!
I remember when I was a little kid I saw a really old Star Trek movie. Kirk traveled back to the 80's to get some hump back whales. Any way, Scotty had to use one of there computers to have the guy make some strong glass. He tried talking to the computer like they do on Star Trek. The guy told him to just use the key board.
The point is I allways wanted a computer that listened to voice commands. I was wondering, is there software like that for Linux? I'd like to say, "Computer, check my email" and it'll open my email for me while I put my jeans on in the morning. My other question is, what's the closest thing to a AI that we have? I know we don't have any thing that's self aware like Commander Data, but what's the closest thing I can do to make my computer look like some thing I pulled out of the 24th century? I remember once I installed something on Windows that stared to recognize my voice after a while so every time I said "start menu" the damn start menu would open up. But it sucked, I would say one thing and the computer would get confused thinking I was saying something else. It was like trying to teach a 1 year old English. I'd pay my left arm if I could get my computer to say sarcastic stuff if you told it to do stupid things. Like if some one comes in my room and says, "Computer, make me some toast" and the computer says, "make your own damn toast you lazy fu**er"! That would be pricelist. Hell I'd like to get my computer to talk in a female voice and give her some sexy girl name. Reminds me of the AI on Andromeda. |
here you go: http://freespeech.sourceforge.net/
is that what you're looking for? i don't think there are robots with any personality yet. i've heard that for a couple thousand dollars a day or something, you can rent a robot from Honda to do chores (like clean up your room). pretty weird.... |
LOL!!
WarlockofVirgo, no offense man, but you're one of the freakiest people I've ever seen. I like people like you ;) |

to get it to talk back you can use something like festival , (or to make it easier use festival thru the speechd program) , all you would have to do was write a script or program to tell it what to say ... i currently use it to greet users logging in
echo welcome $USER >> /dev/speech (and it does come with a girls voice if you want it .. (i use that one as i think its easier to hear what its saying)) |
