I have just been looking around, and have found this. The first bit fleshed out what I was reading yesterday about the donation from M$, and maybe that means that the US gov need to use litigation to seperate the B&MG foundation completely from any input by billg & co or as the comment infers, treat it as a taxable corporate entity.

Then I don't quite follow the bit called "dirty unix secrets" because I don't know enough of the "politics" that surround linux/solaris etc but would be interested if anyone could explain

Oh and sorry if the mods feel that this isn't the correct forum for this, I thought is would be because of the relevance of the first two sections in the article. If I have got it wrong please move it

Did you get a chance to look at the article, more specifically the second bit (the first bit is more blatantly underhanded trickery from "Der furher Willhelm" and therefore self explanatory) as it was a little over my head, I mean I know some members here are a little on the anti M$ side of things (me and others) but I thought it suggested some sort of non-microscum inter OS guerilla war going on - or did I get the wrong end of the stick?

Just read most of it now.

Not sure what to think. I don't think Sun should go LSB compliant with their OS, me personally working with it, I like it just the way it is. Maybe one reason why I use Slackware, they don't move things around that often (hence why they call it the most Unix like).

Your point being "that if it ain't broke, don't fix it" or is it just not changing it to be more "linux like" so it can be made LSB compliant?

More like the sysVinits of RH, Mandy, SuSe, Debian, are pretty evil. I tried to write one a while ago, took about 5 minutes to make a solid one for Slackware's BSD-ish init, and after 2 hours of pouring through /etc/rc.d/inet.d/functions I got a headache and just echo'ed a line into rc.local. Icky phlegm no fun.

I thought kind of the same thing about the India donation, although I have to say I could never have summarized it with as much careful cheek as that letter to the editor, that was smart.

???

I may not understand exactly what this guy is saying (in the Register letter) but I thought Linux was POSIX standard. It seems to me it is the fault of the distros for breaking standards, not the kernel itself. Although when I made my LFS I kept it inline with the FHS, just for the sake of being 'correct', as long as the apps you need are on your path does it really matter what 'bin' they're in?

I have to admit though, it is a nuisance when RedHat drops 130 directories and 50 loose files in your /usr/share and /usr/include directories.

Seen a couple on that topic Finegan, and as it says in the article it's connected with semantics/pedantics - but I suppose in someways, it is fair for the eng' institute in canada to be a little petty about it, I am one of those types who believe that words are important, and am only too happy to ridicule those who get just a litle "too big for their boots" i.e. housekeepers who call themselves domestic technichians, or maybe hygiene technicians who should really be refered to as what they are - cleaners.

I suppose that those who have studied for say a P.Eng (what, 3 maybe 4 years) are entitled to get shirty. Though unless a given country has legislation to prevent this I don't really see what can be done about it - and of course the eng' institute in canada haven't done themselves any favours except to make themselves seem "vaguely ridiculous".

Sorry for a quick "off track" example about "words" - many moons ago, I worked for Brighton council in the Royal Pavilion, we had Ruth, this beautiful black girl (Zimbwean) who was waitressing while her husband was finishing some doctor training. We had one lady on the security staff - a pleasant enough person, but always a little condescending and she had one of those nasal type whining voices, anyway, don't remember what the two of them were talking about, but the security lady happened to say "but it's different for "coloured" people like you" when Ruth the black girl went absolutely "bat shit" at her. Shouting at her in Ndebele (Matabele language) and english, with the tears - the works.

Anyway, after Ruth had calmed down, I managed to work out that it was the use of the word "coloured" that she had objected to. In her words, she explained that she was a "Bleck, and not a fecking coloured" and that this offence was connected to when the apartheid regime had controlled South Africa. If you where a Black african, you were black, if you where white - well you were white, absolutely anything else, meant that you were "coloured" (you will have to imagine that Ruth spoke with an incredibly strong southern african accent).

I think that was my first experience of someone going crazy because of words. Hence I try quite hard to select mine with care and respect for those to whom I am talking (though not always successfully!)

Funny old things words eh!!


And, just for nosyness sake, is there lots of work available with the sun certificates, as I hadn't heard of that one, just as I can't remember the acronym of the one handed out by many of the linux distro types (excluding the RHCE one, and again, they could be playing with canadian fire (northern lights) when they suffix the qualification with "engineer")
