The advent of the internet providing almost everyone with The Libraries of Earth just a click away has vastly improved the average quality of "armchair devotees", at least in cerebral issues. It doesn't do much for "armchair quarterbacks" other than stats and strategies but libraries don't do much for the physical side which is why "armchair" can be a dismissive term in that area of physique and physical prowess, That dismissiveness barely works for the cerebral... that is assuming one actually chooses to click on cerebral sites instead of such as The Discovery Institute which is an anti Science, anti intellectual wolf in sheepskin's clothing

Geoengineering or what? Fact is, Florida is being either weashed away or cleansed, depending on one's POV.

One has to be either willfully ignorant or blind or both to deny humankind's part in it all, melting glaciers and all!

Trends in Global Tropical Cyclone Activity: 1990–2021
First published: 14 March 2022 https://doi.org/10.1029/2021GL095774Citations: 4
"Key Points
Global hurricane counts and Accumulated Cyclone Energy (ACE) have significantly decreased since 1990 likely due to a trend toward La Niņa

Short-lived named storms, extreme rapid intensification events (50+ kt day−1) and global damage have increased significantly from 1990 to 2021

Decreasing trend in global hurricanes and ACE is primarily driven by downturn in western North Pacific activity"

and:

" Global damage from TCs has significantly increased as well, likely largely due to population growth and increased value of coastal assets (physical structures and non-physical risk exposure)." https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley....9/2021GL095774

While one must be aware that "weather", a localized event, is quite different from "climate", a generalized, large scale average, it just may be worthy of note that some of the most successful, wealthiest business models in existence, Insurance Companies, have either greatly restricted or in many cases totally abandoned any coverage of weather-related events, specifically and recently, fire, wind, and flood.

This is not at all trivial since loss of such premiums represents a very substantial percentage of income. It's a pretty safe conclusion that they consider the loss to be less than the now increased potential losses due to climate. Incidentally, there is zero evidence I can find that declares this change is merely due to "population growth". I suppose they are not willing to risk waiting until the first Category 6 hurricane or F6 tornado is actually recorded. It does appear that will indeed occur sometime before the decade ends. Furthermore, the odds are dependent on extremely scary ignorance, that of the exact nature of Tipping Point possibilities and their detection let alone mitigation. IOW it seems wise to be cautious, prepared, and proactive.

Even in Ireland many houses are uninsurable.

With nearly every storm you get a rise in sea levels, and the place is basically flat. The rise in sea levels = a rise in river levels and all the small towns along the rivers all get flooded again.

There's an additional problem here too. There's a hydroelectric plant at *ArdNaCrusha releasing water from a massive dam on the Shannon, the longest river in the British Isles. There's Government regulation on it's control, with thresholds set. When the dam gets too high, they have to release water, even if it means flooding downstream.

'WASHINGTON, Oct 1 (Reuters) - Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said SpaceX Chief Executive Elon Musk agreed to provide the company's satellite internet service, Starlink, for help in response to Hurricane Ian in areas of Southwest Florida still without connectivity.

"We are working with Elon Musk and Starlink satellite. They are positioning those Starlink satellites to provide good coverage in Southwest Florida and other affected areas," DeSantis told reporters on Saturday. "We are expecting 120 additional large Starlink units to deploy to Southwest Florida."' https://www.reuters.com/world/us/elo...an-2022-10-01/

On people still burning wood, this was in today's news https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-63089348

Britain isn't an EU member, it fell on it's sword in that regard. But I'm sure this isn't good news for them (or Canada).

Everywhere I see ignorant people (willfully or otherwise) cutting down trees.

Destroying the forests and cutting down the trees to build houses (or continue the lies about "green energy") = destroying the ecosystems life on Earth need to live.

In a word, stupid.

I know. And this country is no better.

What's sad is that people never stop and think. It's a bit like folks who, should pumping water out of a sinking ship. Instead, they start pumping it in.

If I didn't understand the bigger issues at play here, I'd be embarrassed by the mess that sentient humans are making of the earth.

I think TorC has brought up an important point, both in his/her last post and also tagline from Albert Schweitzer. We know that what we call lower animals don't think about long term consequences as seen in the case example of rabbits introduced to an island that proliferated until the ecosystem damage made it impossible for rabbits, or many other animals of similar size to continue to exist there. Most animals only know their stomach is growling, they need to fell trees to dam a river, or whatever an immediate need is, is compelling and requires no additional consideration. So the question is, are humans any better? Since it is demonstrable that instinct alone is no hedge and can actually fuel future apocalypse, can we actually use our perceived distinction from "lower animals" and use our intellect and logic to accept change and alter our priorities to protect our long term survival?

It seems to me that most people still live close enough to the edge, as in paycheck to paycheck or board review to board review (where tomorrows profit is important but 20 years from now, and YOUR concerns are maybe negotiable) that Crisis Management (only putting out the fires close enough and high enough to burn your ass) mostly rules. So it seems to me it is a race between just how bad it will need to get before enough recognize that fire over there will spread to here, AND if that distant fire destroys something I need before the fire gets here, and nip it in the bud. We shall see, eh?

Some of us find "we are all in this together" as way too "touchy-feely" but the simple fact is we are no longer as isolated as we once were, for better and for worse. So what will we do? I hope we will be logical, cautious, considerate, and vote for someone who thinks about more than just the next meal.

IMHO, the majority agrees on the need to do something. But as soon as it impinges on someone's comfort zone, forcing a change in lifestyle, a drop in standards, support turns to opposition.

If anything meaningful is to be done, massive changes are required worldwide. Humans cannot bring that about. So we are going to ruin this earth unless we are stopped. Those thinking on the matter can see it - hence this thread. Those reading the Bible at Revelation 11:18 can tell it was foreseen nearly 2000 years ago, along with a lot more.
