Cleaning LCD monitor

Well, this is sort of a weird question but why not ask it? I searched for the answer here on linuxquestions.org but I only came up with one result for CRT's. What is the best way to clean a TFT LCD screen? I have a few fingerprint marks and a lot of dust on my LCD flat panel that I would like to get rid of.

A Damp cloth, Don't use fresh wipes (you know them damp things) They leave streaks.

Window cleaner does work as well (Strange but true) but make sure you have a dry cloth handly to dry it.

I disagree w. the Windex thing although if you are careful you might not do damage. But it has ammonia in it and from what I hear, over time it will hurt the screen.

I found on another site that you can use 60% distilled water and 40% rubbing alcohol w. a soft cotton cloth. I just bought an LCD and put a fingerprint on it and used that approx chemical composition and the cotton cloth and it worked like a charm. Be sure not to rub the screen. I have a 5 year old Sony digital camera w. an LCD on the back and messed it up using tap water on a cloth and rubbing to get a little body oil off the screen. But a big rub mark on it. I can see thru it well when the image is backlit, so no problem but it looks terrible and the backlighting has to be pretty high to ignore it.

BTW, where I found this tip someone said that water and alcohol were the chemical ingredients of Kleen Screen, a commercial product for laptops. I don't know. Never bought any since I don't have a laptop.

Do not use cotton cloths to clean LCD. The cloth needs to be lint free and be designed for lens. I recommend going to a camera store and use the products in there. LCD monitors like from Apple can not be clean with liquids. They have to be clean with a special cloth. If you do not know, ask the manufacture.

Probably the liquid solution that whitster has given is a good start for most LCD monitors, but not for all.

Cleaning LCD monitor

Thanks Electra for your reply. For grins I googled LCD monitor care and on the Lenovo site they have for the care and cleaning of a Thinkpad LCD and TFT LCD screen, to use a lint free cloth as you advise. And they also add later that if you need to that you can use a 50/50 "isopropyl alcohol/contaminant free water" solution on the lint free cloth with the excess squeezed out and make sure it's dry before the laptop is closed. You are probably therefore correct not to use a cotton cloth but I really don't have on hand anything but the remains of well washed old T-shirts that really don't have any lint hanging off them so I cut about a 1 ft. square out and have that on hand just in case.

I also, for overnight, have made a cover out of that same old cloth for the monitor so it will not pick up a lot of dust. Of course I turn the monitor off first and make sure the vents are not covered but I am concerned about the front of the screen picking up dust like a CRT will. But in reality it seems these don't have the static electricity of the CRT's so I may be doing overkill. But the monitor is right in the way of a ceiling vent so.....

Anyway, hope that helps all. It helped me.

Even though it works with CRTs, NEVER USE WINDEX WITH LCDs!!! Sure, it kills your acne, but it'll also litterally kill your LCD screen. Eats right through it.

A cleaned cotton cloth is still abrasive. Go to a camera store or computer store and pick up the lint-free sheets. Do it right and save the grief for later such as buying a new LCD in a few years from now instead now when you did it wrong.

I use a clean sponge and soapy water (dish washing liquid). You manual probably has cleaning suggestions.

I wiped the lettering/logo right off a monitor with alcohol once. Glad it wasn't my keyboard anyway. :o

I clean my monitor about three times a year so splurging on some lint-free, alcohol-free, non-abrasive and usually anti-static too, screen wipes (that maybe cost all of $1 each) doesn't seem like a big deal to me.

Kensington and ScreenKleen brands are only two that come to mind ATM. The "all purpose" wipes usually have scents and other oily additives that leave residue when dry.
