There's nothing new about that. In the 50s and 60s before the "British Invasion" of the USA (that is, the popularity of the Beatles etc.), there were many such groups and singers in the States. That was the era of Tin Pan Alley, when songwriters wrote the songs and singers performed them. Post-Beatles, it became expected that groups would perform their own work. Unfortunately, the ability to play an instrument does not ipso facto translate into the ability to write music.

The cycle will come round again.

Indeed, "the Internet" has already done it. :)

There are today literally thousands of "Internet radio stations" who play ... entirely legally ... music from groups that you have never heard of, and will never hear of, on "conventional media." These groups have found their audience, and they are selling albums downloads.

In fact, "take heart ... 'music' is alive and well." And, thanks to the Internet, more interesting than it has ever been.

And groups who do not get played on regular radio stations, which, having been "consolidated" and dehumanized, have steadily contracted their playlists.

I can't find the link, but, several years ago, there was an emergency in a town in one of the Dakotas (North and South Dakota are states in the USA). The sheriff called the local radio station to ask it to broadcast an alert and there was no one there. The station was completely automated.
