Career in Linux?
 

Dear All,
I am seriously considering my career in Linux.
Currently, I am thinking about RHCT or RHCE Cert. exam.
Please let me know about your opinion.

The RHCT/RHCE are the most respected certs related to linux. Tho, never underestimate a university degree and/or work experience.

I don't think RHCT is too highly valued.. maybe go straight to RHCE

Actually, you can do RHCE and if you get a lower mark, you can end up with RHCT.
Have a look at the RH site for details.
RH is the most well known of commercial Linuxes, so prob not a bad idea.
Its a full hands on test, all day. No paper qns.

How about LPIC? I guess it is equally valued.

LPIC is kinda hard...you have to memorize many things ...
a practical test...can be easier when you're in front of a terminal.
LPIC asks you about every aspect of system administration....so you have to read and practice even if you are a daily system administrator

Work experience and contact network is important factors here as well. Someone with experience and no certification is often more suited for a job, then someone without experience other then his newly received certification. I know a few guys without any formal education with great system administration jobs. On the contrary, I studied system administration a few years ago, and I know practically nothing anymore :P

But I'm not suggesting you to skip the certification here. But be active and interested. If you are going to take RHEL certification, learn something else then RH as well. If you've got the opportunity/time, try do the same thing in suse/debian for instance. And if there is a local LUG where you live, it can be worth attending there. You learn a lot and meet a lots of interesting people. Thats my to cents :)
