Can Your Car Be Hacked?
This is a new field of infosec and I haven't put much thought into this, other then I have bluetooth in my car and I use it everyday.

My little truck can't be hacked because it's 13 years old and came before all this new-fangled connectivity stuff hit the automobile industry.
I dread the day when I must look for a new vehicle, not because I care about connectivity one way or the other, but because the consumer products industry does security so very badly. |

Mine probably can. It's running Windows, or a dumbed-down version of it. My next car will run Linux, or a variation of it. Ford has seen the light, I think.

Everything seems to be networked these days: cars, TVs... The latest idea from the government in the UK is for gas and electricity meters to phone the supplier daily to tell them your usage. Presumably they can then send a compliance officer round to investigate if you use too much. Not in my flat, they won't.

After building my new shop. The meter you describe was installed by my local electric company. They won't send a compliance officer though. They will just be happy to bill me for as much as Texas can get away with. I live in a area where there is no one electrical utility provider. I can pick and choose from many electrical providers. From wind power providers or others. Back on topic: My Cushman Truckster and motorcycles are safe from these new fangled controllers also. I think my next new car type of ride will be a Elio. As soon as I dig up a couple more thousand of dinero. Time to sell another motorcycle, I guess. I bet they are not hijack-able either. |
