Can the Digital age harass or Senior citizens
 
A dear retired friend of mine in his early 70's came to visit me the other day.
He was my best friend and helped me through the years with my dyslexia.
He do to medical resons is in a wheel chair now. And he him self is a savoy
Linux user. So it is Always nice to see him when he visits.

He stayed a few days later then emailed me about a problem at our local gas staion.
He stated that when he came to town he bought beer at the local circle k and they carded him. but that's not enough they demanded the card to scan.
Not being able to reach the clerk she came from behind the counter took his driver license and scanned it. The tossed it back at him and he caught it.

He told me on his way back he stopped the same place for gas and again to see if the same clerk would card him and she did. he told her to keep the beer.
That the first was a charm after that your stupid. A 12 year old can buy gas here and burn the place down with out an ID.
Is the digital world and protection or is it harassment of our elder citizens.

Do we not earn a few rights with age. Isn't computers and the digital era suppose to help us.
This man fought for his country paid taxes for years that built the city only to become a swipe of a card. The ridicule is terrible from my eyes.

This whole country has turned into a Naziistic police-state. Illinois seems to be especially on a fast-track to total tyranny (They even have the audacity to have a state law which says that you can't photograph/video police in public places/on public streets, even though the Supreme Court upheld our right to do just that...)

And our people are just as bad as the politicians. Mindless idiots (like that store clerk) who have no respect; judgment or discernment. They function as automatons, programmed by the state, and "just follow orders" and do what they are told. Totally disgusting!

It amazes me how stores smile at our elder people then put them through the hoops just because the people they hire are unable to type.
So they take it out on the customer. Burn baby burn.

The store doesn't have to scan the card, so it must be a store/company policy. That only happened to me once, and I refused to let them scan the card. They called a "manager" who said to go ahead and do the transaction without the scan.
They, whomever they are, are not scanning my driver's license for any reason.

Reminds me of rares occasions when the Credit-card terminals aren't working, the person behind the counter asks if I have another form of payment.

What? You can't process a credit card manually?
And then threaten to call the police because I have no "alternate" form of payment.

Even broke watch is right twice a day. :(

We are literally witnessing the end of our glorious western civilization, these are all just symptoms visible to us daily. Intelligence has departed for another part of the universe.

Here is another one, merely representative, not even of particularly special importance any more - sad to say.

I often say that we have already entered a new dark ages. That is not hyperbole... just light a match and look around you!

But then, ask yourself, when was the last time that you laughed out loud, mumbled "Idiot!", or actually said "NO!" to one of them? It is an essential skill that we must learn quickly...

you know Sometimes I feel exploited I am not a young man. But the thought of cities allowing them to do this type of exploitation. Urbana Il a mecca of the digital world and have nothing better to do then harass an old man. Who are the we to vote for the same people over and over.

We are all created equal and in possession of certain unalienable rights - beyond the scope of disrespectful bands of idiots - even those "voted" in by other idiots.

Governments, even when composed of costumed idiots who no longer deal with other humans as "equals", derive all their just powers from the consent of the governed.

Your vote is one form of your consent to be governed by them.

The only way out is to withdraw your consent, just say "NO!" and reassert those pre-existing unalienable rights.

Yes, that has consequences...

Solutions:
1) Speak to their superior, if they are the same, keep going up. Someone up there probably cares about their business.
2) Speak up about it and don't go there again, tell others not to as well (verbally and/on online). Their business suffers and maybe they'll learn.

Personally, any maltreatment from any employees working anywhere and their boss will hear about it from me, or their boss' boss. Depending on their reaction I may never go there again. I don't need to put up with their s***, there are plenty of stores and competition. It is more of a problem in forgotten countries outside the US, which I have visited, but if you speak to the boss things tend to get settled quickly and easily. It is usually employees that are on their way out anyway.

I looked today how many gas stations in the city have this policy the main 2 are mobile and circle k. and they own 80 percent of the stations in town here.
these are owned by Large oil corporations that have multi international owner beside USA owned. What does a 70 year old mans info given to another country
bring these people. Wonder Does the leaders in the town know what they are doing. NO!

My guess is that this is a case of using the IT Dept. to control the clerks.

I chew nicotine gum (not proud of it but beats the heck out of two packs of cigs a day). Starting a few months ago, the drug store chain I use cannot sell me a box of it unless the clerk enters a birthday into the computer. I am clearly not under age, but the computer blocks the transaction without a valid date (usually I just make up something plausible). It's annoying and stupid, but lacks malicious intent.

My guess is that, in my case, this is a strategy to make sure that overworked clerks don't sell nicotine to under-aged buyers by forcing the clerks to look at the IDs. When management is clearly incapable of managing, they turn to IT to create Systems.

Given that under-aged persons frequently target convenience stores to purchase beer, wine, and cigarettes (I sure did lo! those many years ago), I'm guessing that this policy has more to do with stupid than it does with malice. The scanning is likely a defense against fake IDs.

We are awash in stupid; never assume conspiracy when stupid explains the facts.

I think the issue is not technology for seniors. It is the ability for people who handle credit cards to steal from anyone. It is not uncommon to have a sales agent ask for a card and look at the back. Their POS systems sometimes ask. You'd want your credit card to be secure wouldn't you?

The issue is that many people live blindly to criminals. Many good honest hard working folks don't mistrust enough. I have been a victim too many times so I don't trust anyone.

The best thing this guy can do is learn best practices. He will have to know how to secure his digital world. He also has to secure his credit world.

Tell him to carry only one single credit card. Have it's limit at the very lowest that he would need for a monthly use. He can even lower it down and monitor it weekly/pay weekly. Sign the back that says ID required or get one of the special cards that require secondary means to purchase.

My reading was that the card was a driver's license, not a credit card. In the olden days when I was a young 'un, you would actually hand the credit card to the clerk, who would run it through the scrubber to imprint the card number on the paper credit card form.

It would be quite reasonable for a clerk to ask for the credit card. In some cases, the POS software wants the three- or four-digit "security" code entered by the clerk. The software is "supposed" to forget the security code once it's entered. Whether or not it does actually forget depends on the integrity of the IT Dept.
