you could use VNC to connect to your graphical desktop from your laptop using a VNC client/server setup...

http://www.tightvnc.org

just my two cents...

Linux has faster solutions than VNC.
Let's assume your Tower PC is starting in graphical mode, and is running GDM, or KDM, or XDM (the place where you enter the login and the password).

In this situation, make sure the login manager you use is configured to accept remote connections (XDMCP), or if you don't know how... try your luck

Next, on your laptop, instead of starting in graphical mode, start in text-mode. Login, and immediately start this command:
Code:
X -query Tower.PC.IP.Adress -once
Then you should be presented with the TowerPC login screen.

If this configuration suits you, you can make it better by making it start on boot, thus avoiding the double login.

You can even configure LILO, so that on boot of your laptop, you're given the choice between normal local (laptop) use, or remote display of the TowerPC.

Yves.

yeah, each method has it's own advantages, and speed isn't everything...

anyways, if you do it with X, remember to open port 6000/tcp so your laptop will be able to connect to the X server...

win32sux, you make me think I forgot to tell something: I assumed this setup was a 2(or3)-PCs-only local network.
If it is dozens of networked PCs, or if the local network can access internet, a little more security should be added.

Apart from global care (firewall, and all), this setup can be secured by making the connections between the two PC through SSH (and making SSH forward the X display). This is true whatever solution you choose.
