Can DirectX work in a Windows XP Guest?
 

Howdy.

I have windows Xp as a guest OS in virtualbox. I enabled 3D acceleration and I installed guest additions as well.

My DVD drive is a dvd/blue-ray. I can play dvd movies in the windows XP fine, however when I'm playing blueray movies all I hear is audio playback but no video.

My guess is the built-in graphic card in the VM is not capable of playing HD movies or I don't have DirectX. Has anyone played a blueray movie in a VM or does anyone know how? Or will installing DirectX will solve this issue.

What makes you think DirectX has anything to do with it?

just a wild guess because I read that directX handles multimedia applications. I don't use Windows that much I mostly use fteebsd and Linux.

How did you try to play movies? Can you try another player?
You can use dxdiag to check directX, but I think it is not related...

I use both vlc and Ideer to no avail. I think the built-in graphic card in the VM can't handle HD blueray movies whereas to running widows on real hardware. VMs don't have access to the real graphics card on the system to take advantage of the card's 3D graphic acceleration and other GPU features. So, I will continue watching blueray movies on my home video blueray player for now.
