Can a 56k modem pick up a call (connecting 2 modems through PSTN)?

Can a connection this way be set for backup purposes ?

Thank you.

Sure you could use ppp to do so.

Modems make me all warm and fuzzy for my bbs days... except for the speed part.

A modern backup over a modem... is... unlikely unless you're *extremely* choosy about what you backup.

I meant backup for administrative purposes, such as trouble shooting end points in microwave point-to-point links.

They can but you'll only run at 33.6 or less because higher than that requires digital switching which you won't have unless you have a T1 or larger coming in to your facility.

You can easily set them up on most routers and almost any distribution of linux for such purposes.
